In the female population, diabetes increases the possibility of associated complications.

The risk of depression increases more in women with diabetes and the same happens with eating disorders.

On the other hand, some women with diabetes have less interest in sex, due to depression or because they always feel tired due to changes in glucose level.

When they suffer from pregnancy, this has an additional psychological effect, because the baby could suffer disorders.

Additionally, although coronary heart disease is less frequent in women than in men, when the pre -existing condition is diabetes, then the risk is much greater in women and the probability of suffering coronary heart disease, such as myocardial infarction or angina ofchest (known as "pre-infarction") is more than double.

We receive in our writing to Dr. Ana Lia Cagide, which tells us about diabetes in women:

“Diabetes, which has been qualified as one of the greatest health emergencies of the 21st century, is a chronic condition that occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin or does not use it properly, and is diagnosed when high levels ofblood glucose.High glucose levels can cause heart problems, blindness, renal failure, lower limb amputation and infections. ”

Women and diabetes

· Women with diabetes often experience sexual dysfunctions and according to a report, 27% of women with diabetes said they have sexual dysfunction, compared to 15% of the control group.12

· Women with diabetes are twice as probabilities that women without diabetes, to live in more disadvantaged socio -economic circumstances.13

· Depression is a comorbidity associated with the most frequent diabetes in women and related to adherence to treatment and mortality.14

· Metabolic changes associated with the arrival of menopause increase the risk of type 2.15 diabetes

Main Types of Diabetes

· Type 1 diabetes: an autoimmune reaction causes the body to stop producing insulin. It can occur in patients of any age, but it is common to happen in children and young people.Patients with this type of diabetes require insulin daily to control glucose level;otherwise they can die.

· Type 2 diabetes: It is the most common. In this case the body produces insulin, but is resistant to it, so it loses its effectiveness and over time is insufficient, which alters glucose levels in the body. The symptoms are little marked so the diagnosis occurs when the patient is already manifesting complications.

· Gestational Diabetes: It develops during pregnancy, usually around week 24. This does not mean that the patient had diabetes before or will suffer after childbirth.10

Recommendations

“A healthy diet and regular physical activity can prevent up to 70% from the appearance of type 2 diabetes.

In the case of women, who in many cases usually reduce importance to symptoms and their proper food, it is of the utmost importance that periodic reviews are made.Once the disease is diagnosed, following medical treatment will be key to controlling any potential complication.
