Are we far from a cure?in type 1 diabetes? This is attractive title proposed by CIDI, the Innovation Center for Child Diabetes - Sant Joan de Déu, who organizes a day of dissemination on today in research in type 1 diabetes.

A day that will be on Saturday, November 29 in Cosmocaixa, the Museum of Science in Barcelona and that after the success of the first edition the squares are exhausted, however the organization offers the possibility of following the day through streaming.

The day are we far from a cure?It will bring together four researchers who will expose the lines of research in which they work to advance in a possible cure for type 1 diabetes and that will expose their ideas in this order;

dr.Jesus White

Specialist in Endocrinology I Nutrition.CIBERDEM Researcher-Health Institute Carlos III

Fighting type 1 diabetes from within: would we be able to re -educate the Immune system?

The origin of type 1 diabetes mellitus is an attack against insulin producing cells in the pancreas (beta cells) by the immune system itself. We can say then that it is the result of an "excess of heat" of our defenses. While biotechnological strategies such as the search for an artificial pancreas, the generation of new beta cells from stem cells, genetic manipulation or the creation of biocomputational systems seem to advance at a good pace, a question arises: and if we were able to reedocarTo our immune system?

dr.Ignacio Conget

Senior consultant.Diabetes Unit.Department of Endocrinology.Clinic and University Hospital of Barcelona.ICMDM.IDIBAPS

From the syringe to artificial pancreas

In recent years, evidence has been accumulating around the efficacy and safety of technological improvements applicable to the treatment of type 1 diabetes, especially in regard to the development of continuous insulin and continuous monitoring systems of theglucose. In the coming years, together we will try to answer the following question: is it possible to automatically control (artificial pancreas) the glucose figures and "relieve" patients with type 1 diabetes of the heavy daily task of self -control of self -control ofthe disease?

Dra.Begoña Aran

Doctor in biology.Researcher in stem cells

Cell therapy applied to type 1 diabetes

Human embryonic stem cells have meant a scientific revolution due to their potential ability to form any type of body cell. Its importance lies in its possible use to treat diseases due to the loss of cell function such as diabetes, among many others. In recent years it has been shown that we can get cells very similar to embryonic stem cells reprogramming adult cells.Therapy with these cells would avoid immune rejection, since they would come from the patient himself.

Javier Macía

Researcher of the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences.University Pompeu Fabra (UPF)

Is it possible to regulate glycemia outside the pancreas?

The regulation of blood glucose levels is one of the main functions of the pancreas through the production of insulin and glucagon. When this fails, can we move this function to other types of cells of the organism reprogramming them to emulate the functions of the damaged pancreas? The latest advances in synthetic biology and cell circuitry, the result of the combination of molecular biology, medicine and engineering, point in this direction.Project promoted by CIDI and Social Work "La Caixa"

The organization of the day are we far from a cure?Consider a fantastic opportunityTo know and understand four different research areas in children's diabetes that are currently being carried out: stem cells, immunology, artificial pancreas and cell reprogramming.

Well, much to our regret if, the supposed "cure"/"miracle" is far away, at least most we will not see, at least in this life

As long as we are more profitable patients, they will not take it out.

Although it is hard to say the same, we move a lot of money and maintain many jobs, as are enriched at our coast.

Well .., I have confidence in public research. But it is not easy.
Better treatments will come out and see what happens with stem cells.

That of the jobs do not care at all to those who take the money really the pharmaceuticals, it is more due to the robots, there are less and less jobs in the industry, so we are not complicating and let's look at the"They move many jobs" because they only enriched "4 "and of course I think the cure will be discovered and not only that of this disease but that of many others, so there is no other left to continue waiting.
