To the extent that age progresses, the possibilities of losing sight or that this sense of the human body is affected in a considerably and irreversible way increase.
On the one hand there is diabetic retinopathy, a condition that causes blindness in people with diabetes that never, or rarely, were careful to control their blood glucose levels.
The drastic "ups and downs" of sugar were the result of having been self -placing in food, in addition to not having correctly attached to treatment. In addition to this and despite knowing sick, they never or rarely visited the ophthalmologist, so that the disease was sneaked.
Losing sight by diabetic retinopathy means that the retina has emerged, an event that once happened is no longer reversible.
It is estimated that in Mexico there are 10 million people with diabetes, of these 30% have some degree of diabetic retinopathy and of these are indeterminately counted the cases that come in a timely manner to diagnosis and treatment, so most are confined to blindness.
Talking with the ophthalmologist *Martín Flores Aguilar, he told us that this does not have to end like this, since there are diabetics with 30 years of suffering from the disease that, having controlled it they never have any manifestation of diabetic retinopathy.
The bad thing is that people often find out that they are diabetic and that they have retinopathy when they go to consultation because they no longer see well, thinking that the problem will only limit themselves to the prescription of some increase lenses.
The other way that deteriorates vision is the disease known as age -related macular degeneration, a condition that is mainly triggered when people have a relative that suffer from it or if they are smokers.
During aging all cells of the human body are atrophy, depending on the habits or vices that are taken, oxidation can be premature or move slowly. In the case of the macula (which is the central part of the retina and the one that is responsible for perceiving fine details such as the characteristics of the face, the letters when reading, enter others) this aging evolves quickly and in 30 days it can have irreversible damage.
Who suffers from DMRE will not be blind, however his visual capacity will deteriorate considerably.First he will notice that he has a central work at a specific point - the letters of the newspaper, for example -, later all straight lines will be distorted until it will be impossible to focus on the center of the visual field. As it is a progressive disease, this impediment to see will advance until the entire retina is damaged.
In this sense, ** Juan Manuel Jiménez Sierra stressed that the ophthalmologist is the only specialist capable of detecting the DMRE, a condition that although incurable today can be controlled with a new drug called Aphlibercept.
According to specialists, it is somewhat complicated to prevent this disease. One of the alternatives is the consumption of antioxidants, although they claim that there are no studies that demonstrate scientifically demonstrated improvement.
The other options are not smoking and if you have 60 years or more, the ideal is to go to the ophthalmologist to perform a check up of the eyes for at least every two years. In case of having a relative with DMRE, this review should be every year from completing half a century of life.
*Dr. Martín Flores Aguilar is president of the Mexican Retina Association.
** The ophthalmologist Juan Martín Jiménez Sierra is head of the Department of Electrophysiology of Retina and assigned doctor of the department of retina and vitreo in the hospital of the association to avoid blindness in Mexico.
To be in mind:
NonePublic policy, no specialist, no one in particular will take care of your person like you, since only in your hands you are to seek, reach and maintain health, because the best ally is the one who is reflected when it is in front of the mirror.
