Astrazeneca and the IDIBAPS Health Research Institute have launched the 'Astrazeneca Chair of Diabetes Innovation', whose mission is to become a "national and international reference" in the generation of knowledge in the field of diabetes.

The objective, as pointed out by the president of Astrazeneca, Ludovic Helfgott, is to enhance translational research and the incorporation of innovative procedures that facilitate an early diagnosis of the disease, a better knowledge of its ethiopathogenesis and the application of innovative treatments.

For this, the chair will focus on participation in competitive translational research projects in diabetes, aimed at improving clinical practice;as well as in the promotion of initiatives that promote the development of new techniques and procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

In addition, continued relationships will be established with key groups representatives in this field, such as health centers, scientific societies, research institutes and universities.

Similarly, it will promote activities aimed at completing the teaching offer for health professionals in the Diabetes field. In this case, it is also going to focus on groups with which it is a priority to establish continuous relationships, including educational centers, scientific societies and universities.of new therapeutic education methodologies, especially in the field of nutrition and lifestyle.

For this, synergies will be established with associations of patients, social and cultural, and all those entities that enhance the acquisition of healthy habits.

"The concrete work of the chair will be to create a network work area in translational biomedical research oriented to diabetes, which benefits all those professionals interested in innovating clinical practice aimed at the acquisition of new paradigms," said Helfgott.

On the other hand, the Chair will have a training approach, based on which work days will be promoted for which there will be outstanding medical professionals interested in promoting research and innovation in diabetes in their respective centers and, toIn turn, work in a network with other professionals who pursue common objectives. "This initiative is intended to promote talent and innovation among young endocrinologists so that they are able to assume the new challenges in the field of diabetes that arise in anear future, "said the director of the Idibaps Health Research Institute and the Chair, Ramón Gomis.

The Chair will have the support of the members of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the Clinic Hospital, and the research groups in Diabetes and Obesity of IDIBAPS, which includes nurses, nutritionists, basic and clinical postdoctoral researchers, epidemiologists.
