It is not uncommon for women living with diabetes to experience inflammation of the mucous wall of the vagina, that is, vaginitis, because having high levels of glucose is the target of infections, mainly caused by fungi or bacteria.

These types of affections in the female reproductive organ can find the casualties in the immune system or by changes in acidity (pH) inside the vagina.

"The pH changes when the person has hyperglycemia, excessive amount of glucose, because the mechanisms of defense of the vagina are altered, and the infections are more frequently presented," said the gynecologist and surgeon Alejandra Morales Sánchez, attached to the ABC Hospitaland the Anahuac Clinic in Mexico City.

Other causes for which there may be vaginal infections are prolonged treatments with broad spectrum and/or corticosteroid antibiotics, oral contraceptive administration, obesity, wearing very tight clothes and tobacco consumption.Even vaginal washing can cause vaginitis due to the changes in the flora.

"Women with diabetes mellitus are more likely to suffer from vaginal infections, so it is advisable to have good blood glucose control, avoid their sudden changes, adequate food not to trigger this pathology," explained Dr. Morales Sánchez.

The specialist commented that prior to the menstrual period, women lower their defenses, for example, they are flu prone, diarrheal paintings and vaginal infections, and with greater risk those who have diabetes.

“If patients neglect their glucose levels, their immune status will not be optimal to avoid infections, and not only vaginal, but urinary, intestinal or respiratory diseases, instead they are well compensated and exercise, their immune state will be optimal”He said.

According to the specialist, patients with diabetes mellitus who do not take care of their glucose, intimate hygiene levels will present vaginal repetition infections, and who could later lead to pelvic disease, inflammation that rises to the uterus and not having aGood treatment is generated obstruction in the fallopian tubes or more serious injuries, even losing the uterus.

Some vaginitis signals are inflammation, ardor when urinating or having sex, itching in the vaginal zone or some type of unusual flow.Likewise, white, gray or yellowish secretion with strong smell that increases after washing with soap are symptoms that accuse the presence of bacteria; If the flow is viscous and lumpy whitish, as yogurt, it may be due to fungi in the area, known as candidiasis.

According to the specialist, there are currently successful treatments for this infectious process, but it is important to set aside the penalty or shame and address an expert, since family or self-medical advice may have unavailable results.(ID agency)
