An agreement to recruit people for a research study on the car management of patients with type 2 diabetes was announced yesterday by Professor Nancy Dávila, associated professor at the Nursing School of the Medical Sciences School of the University of Puerto Rico and the LicensedRamón Pabón García, Executive Director of the Center for Research, Education and Medical Services for Diabetes.
“For more than two decades, diabetes has been the third cause of death in Puerto Rico, more than 500 thousand adult people unfortunately suffer from diabetes and pre-diabetes.It is a disease that has no cure, silent and that generates complications from feet to the head, until it is taken to death.Therefore, education and self -management of the condition is the spearhead to combat this terrible disease, ”said Pabón García.
“For our entity it is a great privilege to be part of this study and congratulate the Nursing School of the Medical Sciences Campus that this initiative has had to develop it, since it will end with our mission and vision.We extend an invitation to diabetes patients to participate to assume control of diabetes and not diabetes put their life at stake, ”added Pabón García.
“The purpose (of the study) is to explore the knowledge of patients, attitudes/beliefs, barriers and facilitators to fulfill the self-management of the diabetes condition.Participation is that the people who participate will be part of a group to dialogue on the self-management of their home condition, ”Dávila explained in a statement.
“They can participate if they are Puerto Ricans, they were born in Puerto Rico or one of their parents is Puerto Rican);have between 45 and 65 years of age;Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for one (1) year or more.You can understand and speak Spanish;It has a glycosylated hemoglobin greater than 7.5 mg/dl and has no condition that prevents you from performing physical activity, such as walking. ”
It was reported that the time that each person will dedicate to the study is about an hour and a half.Participants will receive a monetary incentive to cover transportation expenses.
“The Center for Research, Education and Medical Services for Diabetes is located on the first floor of the Student Affairs Building (and before pharmacy) of the UPR Medical Sciences Campus in Río Piedras and its medical director is Dr. José Cangiano.
“In the center we have available medical services, sub -specialists in endocrinology;nephrologist;Visual health with ophthalmologist- retinologist;exercise physiologist- educator;We provide all dental services;nutritionists;epidemiologist;research unit;Nursing specialized in evaluation of diabetic patients and we are accredited by the American Diabetes Association, ”said the Health Services Administrator, Pabón García.
