Half of children's parents with school -age diabetes have had to modify their work activity to be able to attend properly, according to a study developed by the Diabetes Foundation.
The study, which aims to thoroughly know the difficulties faced by families with diabetes, in order to draw plans that facilitate the full integration of these minors in all areas of life, points out that, however, fathers and mothers agree that having diabetes "does not make it difficult to integrate the child into their school environment and friends."
According to study data, in which 880 mothers and fathers of children with diabetes between 3 and 16 years participated, only 50% of teachers know what type 1 diabetes is. In addition, 5% of parents said thatHe had to change his school son, and 4% denounced that they did not admit their child at the school for having diabetes.
In the age group of children under 6 years of age it is where parents found more problems in the school due to this disease, reaching the figure to 27%.Likewise, about 16% claimed to have varied the pattern of glycemia or insulin controls due to lack of collaboration in the center.
“It is necessary to underline that although the teachers, as well as their classmates, know that these children have diabetes, it is still necessary to increase information and training to teachers to facilitate the child a healthy lifestyle and a safe environment and, especially, forKnow how to handle diabetes in schools in case of emergency, ”said the study co -author and doctor in Psychology, Marina Beléndez.
Another of the demands that claimed 70% of the parents was that schools have a healthcare professional to be able to attend and control children's blood glucose levels.
Integration
Compared to the previous study, developed between 2004 and 2006, the situation during the last decade improved gradually in some aspects such as sports practice in schools."Anyway, parents consider the teachers and the rest of the staff of the educational centers to solve everyday situations, as well as the existence of nursing personnel in each school," said the other author of the study, the employer of the patron of theDiabetes Foundation and Psychologist expert in the disease, Iñaki Lorente.
Likewise, the conclusions of the study indicated that these children are fully integrated into schools. In this regard, in 84% of the cases it was the children themselves who announced their classmates who have diabetes.
In addition, almost all children with diabetes do sports with their classmates in a completely normal way, although only more than 30% of parents think that the physical education teacher would know how to recognize hypoglycemia.
