Gestational diabetes is usually presented after the 24th week of pregnancy, warned the head of the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Ministry of Health Jalisco, Alberto Ocampo Chavarría.
The pregnant woman begins to present a series of hormonal alterations, which causes glucose levels to rise and therefore diabetes will be presented, said the specialist.
"It is only during pregnancy that these alterations in glucose are presented, when your body produces an amount of hormones to help the baby's development and once it gives birth, the levels tend to normalize," he said.
He also announced that only 26 percent of women who present this problem or alteration in five years after the obstetric event can develop type II diabetes mellitus.
Ocampo Chavarría said that in these cases, the newborn is large, with a weight greater than three and a half kilograms, but "metabolically speaking does not present alterations or diabetics, which is what could be thought of."
He explained that the fact that the child has a high weight can condition him to later have greater feasibility to develop diabetes in his types I and II, it depends on the age at which this factor occurs.
Care in the newborn, the expert detailed, will have to be from the type of milk prescribed by the pediatrician, which will recommend breast milk.
When food intake begins outside the maternal breast, the nutritionist must be used to adjust the caloric requirements of the child that allow it to reach its normal weight and not present subsequent complications.
If in pregnancy the woman does not carry a healthy, balanced and does not do physical activity that allows her to take care of her weight, she will condition the child to develop risk factors that in their preschool and school stage can be manifested as overweight or obesity and, byConsequently, develop diabetes and hypertension.
Ocampo Chavarría also suggested carrying adequate prenatal control, in which the doctor routinely, every month, measures blood glucose."If the doctor does not perform this test, we must request it and thereby act in a timely manner to avoid future complications," he said.
