Surgery to cure type 2 diabetes, the one that does not need insulin and is associated with family history and life habits, has been proven effective in 81 percent of cases, according to a study by Dr. Jorge Solano, from the hospitalZaragoza chiron.

Jorge Solano, head of the Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Unit of the Zaragoza Hospital, has released the first report in Spain on the degree of success of diabetes metabolic surgery in 42 patients, who has just presented in 42The XIII Congress of the Spanish Society of Obesity Surgery and Metabolic Diseases.

The study is based on 42 patients intervened by this doctor since February 2010, from all over Spain, of which 17 are women and 25 men, with an average age of 50 years and a diabetes of 8.2 years of seniority average.

Of those 42 patients, 21 were treated with pills, the other 21 needed, in addition, inject insulin.

After the intervention, no patient required insulin, while of the 42 cases, eight continue to be in the case of pills in a dose lower than the original, and in the remaining 34 it has been possible to control diabetes and, consequently, do not require any type of treatment, which is a success rate of 81 percent, said Solano.

Likewise, according to the report, 57 percent of operated patients have eliminated arterial hypertension, 93.7 percent have been removed hypertriglyceridemia and one hundred percent, hypercholesterolemia.

The surgery consists in making a short circuit between the stomach-duodeno and the lower part of the small intestine, thus reducing the time in which the body absorbs the calories of the food and the passage of it through the first portions of the digestive system.

The duodenum is the first segment of the small intestine and in the operation it has been achieved that the food does not pass through it and the immediate vicinity of the pancreas.

According to Solano, "in the duodenum is the origin of the metabolic signal that causes insulin resistance and that is possibly exaggerated or bad synchronized in diabetic patients, preventing the correct regulation of insulin and glucose levels in blood" levels ".

Metabolic intervention to eliminate diabetes is indicated in type 2 diabetics (90 percent of diabetes), poorly controlled, which associate a certain degree of obesity, with an age between 18 and 65 years and with existence of pancreatic reserve.EFE
