Stress is a mechanism for defense of the organism that warns that there is an emergency situation that involves danger or risk to the person. But when this situation extends beyond the brief period that an urgency would imply, that is, when the stress is prolonged, the energy is re-directed towards the body's systems that will respond to the stage to face it, with the consequent shortage to othersThey can serve as protection.
However, constant stress has increased vertiginously the epidemic of chronic-degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, central obesity and even cancer. This is demonstrated by the results of an investigation of the Metropolitan Autonomous University, Xochimilco Unit (UAM-X), in Mexico, carried out in a group of seamstress workers subjected to prolonged stress, and which was directed by Dr. Margarita Pulido Navarro.
“Prolonged stress plays an important role in the development of central obesity, hypertension and type II diabetes, because during this episode it is poured into glucose blood stored in the liver to face the situation.
“As a consequence, the pancreas is stimulated to produce more insulin, but the production of the cortisoid hormone (known as the stress hormone) that will antagonize the action of insulin will also be stimulated and will prevent it from entering glucose inThe cell, which will increase its blood levels. So, there is more insulin that cannot be assimilated until reaching hyperinsulinemia, ”explains the UAM-X researcher.
He adds that with prolonged stress there will be insulin resistance, which is established as the main component of metabolic syndrome, precursor of diabetes, infarctions, embolisms, hypertension and central obesity.
However, insulin also participates in the fat storage process in the form of triglycerides; It also participates in the smooth muscle formation of the arteries that retain sodium, which increases the activity of systemic blood pressure.
“This, gradually create micro-theions in the arteries that will involve the blood clots in order to cover the small injuries and adhere triglycerides and cholesterol that will obstruct the light of the arteries or will detach when the blood pressure rises suddenly, which can cover important irrigation routes, such as coronary arteries that are the ones that irrigate to the heart, or brain or pulmonary, which brings embolisms, heart attacks or thrombosis, ”says Dr. Pulido Navarro.
The study considered 199 sewing maquiladora workers, but only at 98 blood tests were carried out to analyze their antibodies, which are proteins that the agency elaborates to protect cells and tissues from harmful germs.
Thus, the research acknowledged that participating workers are exposed to multiple stressful conditions.Facts such as uncertainty to conserve employment;extensive working days;turn rotation;overtime imposed (sometimes without salary);exposure to noise, dust or toxic substances;repetitive activities;Prolonged uncomfortable positions, among others, have an impact on their health.
The damage is equally in men as in women, but because they now have to participate in the family economy and perform a job away from home are exposed to double prolonged stress, due to work activity and home care.
“Now, the more exposed it is to prolonged stress, the more need the body has to ingest energy -rich foods; Thus, send messages from the requirement and the person consumes carbohydrates and fat.If it is added that the consumption of fish, vegetables and meats is impossible for low salaryMagras, cheap but rich foods and fats will be consumed, ”says Dr. Pulido Navarro.
