I get more about training dogs to recognize hypoglycemia that the cure goes on this path .... I hope so, but the transfer of those results to humans is soooaaaan long and soooaaaaan difficult

Alea, precisely two days ago he was giving a conference at my institute, Ginés Morata, Prince of Asturias of Research and genetics specialist.Among many other things, he told us about gene therapy and, at the end of the conference, I asked him about this issue.
He told me that nine "bubble children" have been cured with this treatment (which have no immune system, due to alteration in a gene). It was possible to introduce the correct gene through a vector virus, but .. two of these children developed leukemia. And there is the problem, gene therapy can have serious consequences, it is not sure yet and that is why it is very limited in humans. It is also true that he encouraged me a lot telling me that type 1 diabetes, today could be controlled very well and that he was most concerned about type 2. I did not ask why, but I imagine that it will be because of the lack of early diagnosis.
What did tell us at the conference is the importance of cloning, recently achieved, of human embryonic cells, and its possible use in tissue regeneration, including pancreatic cells ..
He appointed diabetes several times during the conference, which makes me think that it is one of the diseases with more interest in research.
We will trust new and better treatments that will be arriving.
A hug

Sherpa, I hadn't seen that he was already published.Thank you.

Regina, that's why I put "cure", in quotes. But yes, I think it is, together with research on artificial pancreas, one of the hopes for a more or less short term.We will comment in front of a sidrina this weekend, if you want;)

Good that it works in dogs the gene therapy , but better even in humans, so that they heal cancer ... diabetes and other diseases ...
