Why don't you put just a dose of Lantus? And or try by putting 3 units of Lantus only in the morning. And if he wakes up high, increase to 4.
The snacks, with the right hydrates to get to dinner.

The dose of Lantus it carries is very low, there you have room to go up, as long as you do not have hypos.
