Summer camps begin for children with diabetes of the Valencian Association Diabetes

On July 7, a new edition of the Summer Camps “La Dolce Vita” starts for children with diabetes, organized by the Valencian Association Diabetes.

Organized in two shifts, according to age, the 63 children will enjoy the Turolenses facilities of Camarena de la Sierra. From July 7 to 11, children will attend between 7 and 10 years, from July 15 to 23 the children between 11 and 16 years will go.

The camp has the recognition of health interest of the Aragon government that rewards their participation to resident doctors, nursing students and nutrition diplomas who will be in charge of health care during the days of the camp. All resident doctors come from Valencian hospitals and their participation in the camp, coordinated by Dr. Alcón, pediatric of the Pediatrics Service of the General Valencia Hospital, allows complementing their medical and human training as future specialized care doctors.

In the same way, the Nursing Council of the Valencian Community (CECOVA) recognizes the training course, which is taught for 4 months to nursing students. The course, taught by nurses educators in diabetes, form in diabetes to nursing students, who together with their participation in the camp, instructed in a practical way in the attention to a disease of high prevalence in our society.

The assistance of children to the camp allows to foster their independence in the care of diabetes, since until well advanced adolescence diabetes forces to depend on parents in the control of the disease.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood, it reaches children of all ages, including those who still go to nursery and babies.Only in the Valencian Community it is estimated that around 1200 children and adolescents under 18 suffer from diabetes.Every year more than 100 new cases are diagnosed only in our region.

Unfortunately, and for the second consecutive year, Cantabrian and Asturian associations have not found sufficient volunteers (doctors and monitors), so we are left without a camp again :(

It is very difficult to organize camps, in addition to the shortage of doctors there is ... I imagine that Aureliano (Cantabria) will have tried ... but it is complicated.

In Valencia they form 20-25 students from 2nd nursing (with a 4-5 months course) to go as monitors, so that they are the ones who supervise (with the help of doctors and association staff) toThe children.
Thus they learn firsthand what is a type1 diabetes.

Maybe Fede should boost the camps.

True, Owash.

Aureliano has been doing everything possible, as well as forgetting (Asturian Association).

I think Fede should boost more, but should also raise endocrine, because some are reluctant, even opposite, camps.Celia has always gone, but with the opposition of most endos.

In general, pediatricians are "more rolled" than endocrine.

Without official support and a great global agreement, (Ministry, Ministry, Nursing, Medical Societies and Patient Associations) Diabetes care will continue to be as until now

The camps are another example, both of the attention to diabetes and of the inequalities between communities.
