The twelve percent of the Spanish population suffers type 2 diabetes and a third is unaware that the disease suffers, according to the study di di@Bet.es
presented the first national study study of diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic problems and associated risk factors

Madrid (8-10-10) .- The study di@bet.es , presented at the headquarters of the Carlos III Health Institute of Madrid, has placed the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in twelve percent of the Spanish population. The study results also confirm the association between diabetes, obesity and arterial hypertension, and the importance of physical activity as a prevention method. In addition, he points out that one in three people with type 2 diabetes, approximately four percent of the Spanish population does not know that he suffers from this disease.

In relation to the follow -up carried out by patients from health programs, the study indicates that most people with type 2 diabetes do not modify their health habits in a different proportion to non -diabetic people. It should be remembered that health education programs in people with diabetes seek to exercise, lose weight or quit smoking.

In relation to the diet and, specifically, to the positive aspects of the health of olive oil, the study confirms that people who take olive oil have higher levels of HDLC (good cholesterol) compared to people who consume sunflower.

On the other hand, the study di@bet.es di@bet.es has been based on the realization of close to5,500 surveys and has been developed throughout Spain, with the aim of updating the prevalence data of diabetes, obesity, and other associated metabolic problems and risk factors. The study is part of the National Diabetes Strategy and has been carried out from the Biomedical Research Center of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM) of the Carlos III Health Institute (Ministry of Science and Innovation), in collaboration with theSpanish Diabetes Society (SED) and the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FED).

The information obtained in the study is very extensive and should serve as a basis for upcoming analysis to perform over the next few years. The results of the research must also contribute to an allocation of resources more adjusted to the real magnitude of the problem, as well as to advance in the design of prevention strategies and therapeutic education programs.

The study has been conducted throughout the Spanish territory and has had the collaboration of about 30 researchers in its various phases. The research includes, randomly, the study of 5,419 people over 18 in 100 health centers. The field study, developed over three years, has been developed by various teams formed by a nurse and a dietitian, who have made participants a detailed survey on health habits and other social determinants of health, a storyClinic, an anthropometric evaluation and a blood extraction including an oral glucose overload.

I am struck that only one in 3 diabetics know that they are, when the figures that are handled uniformly (not only in Spain) are that approximately 50% of the diabetics do not know their condition. That is one of the factors that trigger the complications of this disease and increase the sanitary costs associated with diabetes. It is precisely in type II diabetes where the greatest preventive effort must be made.
