My 8 -year -old son has type 1 diabetes 7 months ago.First we put insulin NPH 2 times a day.3 months ago we changed to Lantus. We put 13 units in the morning and I correct it when he eats with Novorapid.
In the morning he gets up with very high blood glucose.I correct it and normalize a little throughout the day because it is always doing physical activity. When I correct it with Novorapid I can not follow a stable pattern according to the measurements or by carbohydrates that consumes why it makes hypoglycemia.
With the Lantus we cannot find the right dose.I was reading that some people get Lantus at night. What do you recommend?Regarding the crystalline insulin to correct with meals, I noticed that when it is high, I should wait 15 min before coma. Can anyone give me any advice?Thank you

Dorita, my daughter debuted at the same age, 8 years.

The beginnings are complicated, but you'll be hit little by little.

If the Lantus puts it in the morning, its maximum effect will be for the afternoon hours, while there is almost no effect.Consult with the endocrine the possibility of changing the schedule at night or at noon.

On the other hand, the doses may not have well adjusted. If your glycemia are low before meals, you have plenty of lantus. If they are high, Lantus is missing.
If they are low after meals, he has a novorapid; If they are high, he is missing novorapid.

Give us more data and tell us where you are, to be able to guide you better.

Greetings

It is likely that the Lantus does not cover him 24 hours .... So it may be a good idea that he puts it at noon, so the end of the Lantus can coincide with the class hours that will have, sure, greater activity.

In any case, consult the change/pediatrician.

In young children I am in favor of putting ultrarapid insulin always after eating ... So we don't get scares if the child does not eat, he does not like food or anything that happens ... I think it's the safest. From 10-11 years you can start doing it backwards ... although each case is a world and cannot be generalized.

Hi Dorita, did you change the application time of Lantus and worked?

People who apply it at night, is not dangerous because of night hypoglycemia? The peak would be early in the morning ...

Mamá de Juanita. Insulina desde Sep 2021. Aprendiendo! Lantus 9u cada 12 horas. Sigue alta!

@Juanita1978, my daughter, the Lantus, putting her at night gave her hypos and did not cover her 24 hours. We spent it in the morning, putting a little more than dose and was much better. No hypos at night and llazing 24 hours, but with a tendency to hypos per day.
Now, with threeiba, hypoglycemia decreased a lot and needs much less hydrates to overcome them.
