Hello,
In Spain, 1 in 7 adults suffer from some degree of ERC, and at the same time, 7.8% of the population has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The worrying thing is that these two diseases are closely related, since DM2It is one of the main causes of the ERC.
Dr. Assumpta Ricart, of Servei Català de Salut, reminds us that patients who have both diabetes and renal failure have a higher risk of complications and greater morbidity and mortality. In fact, the combination of both diseases considerably increases cardiovascular risk, according to Dr. José Jesús Broseta, of the Clinic Hospital of Barcelona.
In Catalonia, more than 300,000 people already suffer from ERC, and the disease affects women and older people more.In addition, it is related to socio -economic factors, affecting more people with low income. This involves great pressure for the health system, since patients with ERC use medical services more frequently, and need more medications and urgent care than those without this disease.
To reduce the progression of ERC in people with DM2, early and integral management is essential. However, a great challenge is that ERC is a "silent" disease in its early stages, which makes early detection difficult.Dr. Joan Francesc Barrot, of the Jordi Nadal Health Center, points out that many patients do not have symptoms until their renal function is seriously compromised, which makes early detection a public health priority.
A key tool for early detection is the measurement of albumin in the urine, an important marker that can indicate renal damage before the kidneys are significantly affected.
Dr. Broseta also mentions that today we have new drug families (antagonists of the mineralocorticoid receptor, ISGLT2 and ARGLP1) that have shown to improve the control of DM2, slow down the progression of the ERC and benefit cardiovascular health.Optimal glucose, blood pressure and other risk factors are key to improving the evolution of these patients.
In conclusion, to combat the ERC associated with the DM2, an integral and multidisciplinary approach is necessary, where early detection, education, and the promotion of healthy habits play a fundamental role. All, from health professionals to patients, have an important role in this fight.
What do you think?
Have you had experiences related to this combination of diseases?
Greetings,
