The Valencian athlete, a native of Sagunto, Alejandro Samper, arrived late on Friday to Ponferrada on his route to Santiago de Compostela with the aim of making visible the problem associated with type 1 diabetes.
Semper was received at the Castle of the Templars by the Lieutenant of Mayor of the City, Iván Alonso, the Councilor for Economic Development, David Pacios, and representatives of the Association of Municipalities of the Camino de Santiago and the Association of Municipalities of the Winter Camino.
The athlete left Sagunto on August 31 with the aim of traveling the more than 1,000 kilometers that separate this town from the compostela capital in 40 days. The idea of this solidarity challenge is to make visible the problem associated with this disease, which he suffers, and raise funds for diabetescero, the only Spanish foundation that seeks funds dedicated to the investigation of a cure for type 1 diabetes.
"I intend to demonstrate, carrying the treatment of diabetes those 40 days in the backpack, the load we carry daily for what it is simply to live as if we were a person who does not have this pathology," Samper explained when this initiative began."Sport is very important to treat diabetes and reduce daily insulin levels," he said.
After passing through the capital of Berciana, Samper will continue his way to Santiago de Compostela.
