In 2019, Arturo Carvajal, a young man from Barbastro, discovered that he lived with type 1 diabetes, a disease that would accompany him all his life. But for Arturo, far from being a limitation, diabetes became an engine to face new challenges and demonstrate that with determination, support and preparation, everything is possible.
After his diagnosis, Arturo decided to surround himself with a solid medical team and learn to control his blood glucose, a task that became key not only for his daily life, but also to pursue his dreams: combine mountaineering with visibility and awareness aboutDiabetes.
In 2023, Arturo embarked on an incredible challenge: ascending the 16 highest summits of all the autonomous communities of Spain. His mission was clear: to demonstrate that living with diabetes is not an impediment to reaching extraordinary goals, even in high -level sport.
For two years, Arturo toured more than 300 kilometers on foot, amounted to 22,282 meters and drove 13,400 kilometers to complete his challenge. On this trip, he was not alone: he was accompanied by friends, doctors and nurses who helped him overcome obstacles such as the adverse climate and physical demands of mountaineering.
Among the most outstanding peaks of his adventure, we find:
- The Pica D’Tats: its first top of more than 3,000 meters, where it enjoyed impressive alpine landscapes.
- The Teide: Facing bureaucratic difficulties and 3,700 meters of unevenness.
- The Aneto: its last top in July 2024, near home and surrounded by friends.
Not everything was easy: Arturo faced an Achilles tendon break that kept him nine months in rehabilitation, a challenge that made him stronger to conquer the last peaks.
In the recent MAB mountain days, Arturo shared his experience, highlighting how he learned to control his diabetes during the ascents: continuously monitoring his glucose levels, adjusting his diet and using insulin when necessary. Its history is an example of how you can fully live with diabetes and overcome any adversity.
Arturo does not rule out new challenges in the future. Its history reminds us that with passion, preparation and support, there is no mountain too high to climb.
From here, we applaud Arturo for his determination and courage, and for inspiring so many people with diabetes to dream big.
