With the arrival of winter, low temperatures and respiratory diseases become important challenges for those who live with diabetes.A proper glucose control is essential to maintain our immune system in good condition and prevent complications derived from respiratory infections.

Dr. Mike Vivas, medical director of Novo Nordisk Mexico, warns that conditions such as COVID-19 or the respiratory syncitial virus (VSR) can have more serious effects on people with diabetes. This is because high blood sugar levels can weaken the immune system and facilitate infections. Therefore, we want to share with you some key recommendations to take care of your health during this season.

1. Control your glucose levels

Keep your sugar levels in the optimal range:

  • Before eating: 80 to 130 mg/dl.
  • Two hours after eating: less than 180 mg/dl.

Remember that a level below 70 mg/dl indicates hypoglycemia, which also requires immediate attention.Monitoring your levels regularly is vital to detect any time alteration.

2. Performs physical activity regularly

Exercising not only helps control weight and improve blood pressure, it also helps improve sleep and mood.Try to do 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week.Of course, check your glucose levels before and after the activity to keep them under control.

3. Watch the portions of your meals

The good eating dish can be your best ally:

  • 50% of the dish: salads and vegetables without carbohydrates.
  • 25%: lean proteins (chicken, fish, tofu, etc.).
  • 25%: carbohydrates (rice, pasta, whole wheat bread, etc.).

Avoid excessive portions, especially when you eat away from home.

4. Do not neglect your treatment

Fulfill your doctor's instructions to the letter. If you have doubts, do not hesitate to consult him.Your treatment is the basis for maintaining glucose in a healthy range.

5. Vacurate against COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases

Vaccines are a powerful tool to reduce the risk of serious infections.Check with your doctor the convenience of vaccinating yourself against COVID-19 and other typical winter diseases, such as flu.

Dr. Vivas reminds us of the importance of facing diabetes with a positive mentality: “It is crucial to learn to live with diabetes and not fight it.You can enjoy a full life if we maintain good habits and take care of our health. ”

In this season, let's take care and support each other. If you have any experience or advice on how you handle your diabetes in winter, share it with the community!

I would recommend everyone to put on the flu vaccine, this year comes strong.

And another vaccine that is a bit unknown, but important, that of the Neningococcus. It will depend on the protocol that your autonomous community has. When you ask that you are diabetic and if you have other medical problems, say them too.Because they are usually put to the elderly or limited risk groups ... a matter of €
