A new study published in Nature Medicine by researchers at the University of Tufts reveals an alarming fact: every year, the consumption of sugary drinks contributes to 2.2 million new cases of type 2 diabetes and 1.2 million cardiovascular diseases at the levelworld.

The impact is devastating in regions such as Latin America, the Caribbean and the Sub -Saharan Africa. In Colombia, more than 48% of the new cases of diabetes are directly related to these drinks, while in Mexico the percentage amounts to almost a third. These data highlight the urgent need for changes in consumption habits and public policies.

These drinks are digested quickly, causing blood sugar peaks without providing nutritional value. Its usual consumption increases the risk of obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic disorders that flow into type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, two of the main causes of death globally.

As part of the community of people with diabetes and their families, we have a great responsibility to stop this trend:

  1. Promote education: inform others about the risks associated with the consumption of sugary drinks.
  2. Make healthy decisions: choose water, infusions or sugarless drinks as an alternative.
  3. Support structural changes: promote public policies that regulate the advertising of these drinks and support taxes that discourage their consumption, such as sugar tax in Mexico, which has already demonstrated positive results.

In forum diabetes, we believe that education and collective action are essential to combat the impact of diabetes.

Each small change counts.Replacing a sugary drinking with water may seem insignificant, but it is a step towards a healthier future. If we also share this message, we can help save lives and strengthen our support network.

What actions are you taking to reduce the consumption of sugar in your life?

To me as guy1, sugary drinks save my life almost daily.

En 1922 descubrieron la insulina, en 1930 la insulina lenta. ¿Que c*** han hecho desde entonces?
