It is a devastating figure. And it is not just a number: it is a life changed forever.Every average minute, somewhere on the planet, someone loses a limb due to complications of the diabetic foot.It is a reality that hurts ... and that we can avoid.

This week recalled Dr. Pablo Gallo González, from the Madrid Ruber International Hospital: the diabetic foot does not appear overnight. It is the consequence of years of bad control of diabetes, of not paying attention to those little notices that we sometimes ignore: cramps, tingling, loss of sensitivity, small wounds that do not heal ...

The situation is especially serious in areas such as the Bronx (New York), where according to Dr. José de León, up to 40 legs per month, mostly to Hispanic and African American patients. The main cause? The lack of control, prevention ... of education.

👉 What can we do today?

  • Check our feet daily.
  • Use comfortable and adequate footwear.
  • Control our glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • PHYSICIAL EXERCISE, EVEN WALK EVERY DAY.
  • Eat healthy, avoid tobacco.
  • Hydrate the feet, maintain good hygiene and cut your nails carefully.
  • And visit the podiatrist at least twice a year!

If you have diabetes or want to take care of someone who has it, do not underestimate how important the feet are.A small wound can be the beginning of something very serious if it is not treated on time.

Have you had any experience with the diabetic foot?

Any trick that works for you to keep them well?

Heh, heh, heh and not so far.

My brother -in -law, 20 years of diabetes, going from everything, even insulin.Madrid, nothing of the US, Africa or any underdeveloped country that we imagine.

Well nothing, they amputated half foot, 3 months admitted because I did not heal, then leather graft, again weeks because not healing, and it has been with this year and still cannot walk because they have to make an orthopedic boot and still end up healing.Well the foot.
