FIASP operation

Hello!

I have a question about how the insulin Fiasp works since it is injected and how its effect is exhausted.

I know that at the time/hour and a half of injecting it makes its maximum effect. But what does this mean? How are insulin units distributed over time?

Since it is injected and as time progresses it is running out?I am going to give an example with invented times and figures to try to explain to me: for example, inject 3 units, at 10 min.I have 2.9 you, at 20 min.2.8 You, at 30 min.2.6 UD, at the time 2 UD and so on until approximately in 3 hours where is there no active insulin?

Or it works in another way in which, for example, 3ud inject, in the first half hour the effect is soft but maintaining 3 ud of active insulin, at the time those 3ud have a more powerful effect and is more effective and are still 3ud of active insulin at their maximum splendor, and then from 2 hours there are still 3 units but with a very soft effect?

Or does it work another different?

I hope I have explained, and if not, I will try otherwise.I have a lot of interest in understanding this because I have a certain fear of hypos and active insulin and I think that understanding its functioning will help me.

Thank you very much to everyone.

Hi @cuevast!

You have raised a very important doubt and you have also explained it phenomenal, so thanks for sharing it 😊

FIASP insulin (like other insulins of fast or ultra -grape action) does not remain constant in the body after injecting it.That is, you do not have “3 active units” ”during its entire route, but its effect varies over time: it begins, it reaches a peak, and then decreases until it disappears.

How does Fiasp work after injecting it?

🔹 Start of action: Start acting at 5-15 minutes, faster than other fast insulins like novorapid.

🔹 Action peak: Its maximum effect is usually between 60 and 90 minutes after injection. This is when you have the most power to lower glucose.

🔹 Total duration: It usually lasts between 3 and 5 hours, depending on the person, the injection zone, physical activity, etc.

And how are those units distributed over time?

It is not linear as in your first example (which would be ideal to calculate everything to perfection 😅), but it is progressively exhausted. The amount of "active insulin" or "blood insulin" is reduced over time, and that is why it is as useful to use apps such as Diabox or Bolus calculators that tell you how much active insulin you have left at all times.

Your second example, in which the 3 units remain active but change "intensity" over time, is not entirely realistic. It is not that the units are "whole" but with different force.Rather, each unit disappears progressively, but its power is not uniform: in the beak it makes more effect, although there is already less insulin in the body.

So how is this interpreted in practice?

➡️ When you calculate if you have to correct or not, or if you can eat without clicking again, you must take into account the active insulin that still remains in your body, because although it seems to you that it has already spent time, it can continue to take effect and cause a hiccup if you click more.

📌 That is why it is very important to understand that insulin is not exhausted and continues to act for hours.

💬 If you want to deepen more, many use bolus calculators (in apps or pumps) that calculate the "active insulin" or IOB (insulin on board), and so we can make decisions with more security.

And, above all, tranquility.Understanding this is a great step to gain confidence and better manage those situations that scare at the beginning, such as hypoglycemia.

If you are interested in deepening how other people with diabetes handle these day -to -day situations, I recommend you take an eye (and give away if you can!) To the book "Live with diabetes: the power of the online community."It is also very useful for friends, couple or family to better understand what we live with diabetes.

A hug, and thanks for sharing a question that surely many also have 🤗

I see it that as an analgesic pill, you take it, it takes a time to dissolve and reach the area of pain, act and with the time for the effect and hurt again.

Well, the FIASP is the same. You put it on, dissolve in the fat and start working, at the time it passes, and slowly the blood glucose rises.

In my case, I had to leave her because her action time is very short in my body and my digestion is longer, I am better with Novorapid.

Sometimes Suopo Insulina, before the end of the first dose is over, I put the second, this is how a pancreas works, segregates insulin on demand.
