A study in Taiwan on 877,233 children born between 2004 and 2008 has found an association between diabetes during pregnancy and several neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity deficit (ADHD), delays, delaysIn development, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
The results showed that the three forms of diabetes (type I, type II and gestational) were associated with a greater risk of neurological disorders and development in children.
The risk was higher in type I diabetes, followed by type II diabetes and, finally, gestational diabetes.
The different types of diabetes also increased the risk of different ways for each specific disorder.
