After being elected as president of the Argentine Society of Diabetes Chapter Córdoba, the endocrinologist and diabetologist Rodrigo Carnero spoke with Puntal about the present of the disease and assured that the number of patients who suffer from it has grown exponentially in the world, for whatthat pathology is considered as a pandemic.

-What importance is your designation?

-It's a pride.Córdoba is the most important chapter of the organization and is the second time that he will be chaired by a doctor from the interior of the province. The commitment we assume is to continue developing academic and training work.In addition, we are committed to bringing precise and adequate information to our patients. At the same time, in recent years we have approached different government entities, such as Apross and Pami, to collaborate with the implementation of treatments. We also brewed to comply with the Diabetes Law.

-Are there more people with diabetes today?

-It's a reality. In the world, the amount of diabetics has been growing exponentially. It is a global pandemic. This comes from the hand of obesity. This grows in the world and, therefore, grows from diabetes.Diabetes has genetic factors and environmental factors.People who have genetic predisposition to develop diabetes can get sick from the presence of environmental factors such as obesity, lack of exercise and stress.I specifically refer to type 2 diabetes, which is the most frequent and occurs mainly in overweight adults. However, now we see overweight teenagers with type 2 diabetes. At the same time, there is a growth of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents who need insulin, but it has not been exponentially given as the other.

-Can diabetes avoid?

-That a person has genetic predisposition does not mean that, it will necessarily have diabetes. When someone makes a diagnosis of diabetes and gives it positive, the problem began 5 years before that moment. That means that if a person who has a predisposition for diabetes, detects it when he is in the instance of pre -eased prediabets or glycems, he can reverse it and, in some cases, never develop diabetes. If that does not happen, it can also make diabetes not start in 5 years, but in 20. Diabetes is a disease that has a great prevention power if one controls and applies an adequate change of habits at the right time.

-Are medication and treatments improved?

-They have improved a lot, although there is still no cure.Yes there are medications that delay the beginning of type 1 diabetes that were recently approved in the United States and that have not yet reached Argentina. There are also medications for type 2 diabetes that help lose weight and control the disease but, above all, they help reduce cardiovascular risk.In the last 10 years, new medications have appeared that, in addition to controlling diabetes, helps lose weight and prevent cardiovascular events.

Finally, it is worth saying that Dr. Rodrigo Carnero is the head of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Service of the Río Cuarto Medical Institute.

Good point @Andrespmat It would be interesting to see if the growth of diabetes is superior, equal to or lower than population growth.

If it is superior, it could be related to habits, industrialization, sedentary lifestyle, etc.

If it is inferior, it could be thought that now we take care of ourselves more and that many cases are prevented, or that we do better.

It should also be taken into account that now it is diagnosed more than before, I am not very clear how this parameter could be introduced in the calculation, but I think it could also justify a greater increase in cases of diabetes.

Now we are able to identify better and before, although there are still many people who are and do not know.

Survival and genetic transmission has also increased., in addition to supercharging, sedentary lifestyle and overweight for 2.
And it is logical that, by increasing life expectancy and diagnostic detection, increase cases.
