A Pharmacies survey will allow to know the risk of type 2 Spanish diabetes mellitus. The one known as Findrisc test allows us to assess the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in the next 10 years.
Pharmacies throughout Spain will conduct a survey during the next weeks to know the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus among the Spaniards, in an initiative promoted by the General Council of Pharmacists and the Spanish Diabetes Federation. The questionnaire, known as Findrrr test, is also available to citizens on the websites of both institutions and the results will allow the risk of diabetes to be valued in the next ten years.
The action will be completed with informative material and recommendations from the pharmacies and social networks of the General Council and the Federation to prevent this pathology, which affects about 6 million Spaniards.
With the collaboration of Boehringer Ingelheim laboratories, pharmacists advise to carry healthy eating and practice physical exercise, in order to control blood glucose and delay the appearance of complications.
For Jesús Aguilar, president of the General Council of Pharmacists, “Community Pharmacists play a fundamental role in public health work and therefore we wanted to promote this initiative with the Spanish Federation of Diabetes with the aim of preventing the appearance of this pathology”.
In addition, he stressed that the pharmacies network "are a true health sensor of citizens which will allow the risk of Spaniards to suffer from the disease and be able to advance prevention strategies."
Aguilar has also underlined the work carried out by pharmacists to raise adhesion rates among chronic patients, “as demonstrated in the adherenciamed program, which confirmed that the provision of the therapeutic adherence service from pharmacies allows us to increase by 30%the percentage of patients adherents to pharmacological treatments and increase their quality of life by 5 points. ”
improve the control of pathology
From the Spanish Diabetes Federation (Fede), and in collaboration with Lifescan, this initiative will be reinforced through information and resources through which, people with diagnosed diabetes can improve the control of their pathology.
Fede's acting president, Aureliano Ruiz, highlights the importance of initiatives of this type because, “of the nearly 6 million people with diabetes in Spain, about 2 million still do not know that they suffer from type 2 diabetes.
Being able to detect in time and diagnose early is essential to avoid complications and, therefore, not have proper treatment. In this sense, the work of pharmacists is key, since every year, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, they support and promote initiatives aimed at this goal.
But in addition, the rest of the year, his close and expert work contributes to improving the quality of life of people with diabetes, being a healthcare professional that patients with diabetes come to make specific consultations and / or doubts ”.
