The Infanta Sofía Hospital, in San Sebastián de los Reyes, today celebrates a day on diabetes in the elderly, in which dozens of experts will evaluate and analyze this pathology in people over 65, with the aim of improving their quality oflife.
The appointment is organized by the Geriatrics Service, which has warned that 25 % of those over 70 have diabetes and that in most cases patients have associated pathologies, such as cognitive impairment, affective disorders, fragility, loss, lossof muscle mass or eating disorders.
This hinders a correct monitoring and treatment of diabetes, says the hospital in a statement.
In the day, diabetes and other problems and "particularities" of the older patient in relation to nutritional aspects, exercise and control of vascular risk factors or antidiabetic and insulin treatment will be addressed multidisciplinary.
In addition, the development of the day will be practical and clinical cases will be discussed that will allow to develop the theoretical objectives of the course.
Center experts have mentioned that 44 % of diabetics are over 65 years old, since the advanced age "predisposes" to suffer from diabetes due to the decrease in physical activity, the increase in adipose tissue and the decrease in secretionof insulin, among other issues.
