Researchers from the Biomedical Research Institute of Lleida (Irblleida), of the German Trias I Pujol (IGTP) research Institute of Badalona and the Cyber of Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM) have shown that adult patients with type 1 diabetes show eating habitshealthier and greater adhesion to the Mediterranean diet than non -diabetic.
The study, published in European Journal of Nutrition, relates adherence to the Mediterranean diet with this type of patients.Research has also positively valued physical activity by patients.
The study shows the influence of the residence due to adhesion to the Mediterranean diet, since patients residing in non -urban areas show a better dietary pattern.Minerva Granado-Casas, the first author of the study, explained that this research is an advance by demonstrating “the importance of carrying out an adequate nutritional education in the population to increase adherence to the Mediterranean diet, both in diabetic patients and in healthy population,in the prevention of the appearance of cardiovascular diseases ”.
The study points to the need to identify strategies to improve the adhesion of patients with type 1 diabetes to a healthy daytime
The comparative study has been carried out observationally, without intervening, with 262 people with type 1 diabetes and 254 people without diabetes, of two hospital centers: the Arnau University Hospital in Vilanova and the Germans Trias I Pujol University Hospital. The researchers conclude that an additional investigation would be needed in this field and in the identification of strategies to improve the adhesion of patients with type 1 diabetes to a healthy diet.
Influence of Mediterranean diet in a lower risk of diabetic retinopathy
On the other hand, another article also made by Irblleida researchers and the IGTP and published in the magazine Nutrients, points towards a possible preventive effect of the high intake of monoinsaturated fats, such as oleic acid, and vitamin E on retinopathy in the retinopathy in thePatients with type 1 diabetes.
In this case, 103 cases of people with type 1 diabetes were analyzed with diabetic retinopathy and 140 cases of people with diabetes without diabetic retinopathy, from two centers, the Arnau University Hospital in Vilanova de Lleida and the Germans Trias I Pujol University Hospital.
Both articles relate the importance of diet in patients with diabetes and the need to continue gathering evidence in this regard.
“We have shown that people with type 1 diabetes, in which a nutritional education is performed, perform a healthier diet, and this provides important benefits.
Therefore, programs should be implemented to achieve the same results in the general population, ”adds Dídac Mauricio, Cyberdem Group Chief at the IGTP and research leader.
