The radio journalist Carles Aguilar culminated his long -distance sports experience in Formentera after 48 hours touring the island with a total of 212 km to sensitize society about the prevention, diagnosis and control of diabetes
The challenge began on September 21 at 10 am very close to the town of San Ferran de Ses Roques in Formentera and from that moment on it was to make the maximum possible number of kilometers for 48 hours in which the stopwatch does notNot a single minute would stop.
The experience for the athlete has been very hard and at the same time inspiring.
According to Carles Aguilar ", this is an island that generates a very special energy and despite the fact that the physical and mental demand was extremely confident to resist until the end" ... the toughest moments have been the two nights alone with a moistureBrutal in the environment and, especially, for mosquitoes that have been an authentic nightmare.
Diabetes, in Spain
In Spain there are currently more than 29,000 children affected by type 1 diabetes and 1,100 new cases are produced every year.On the other hand more than 5,300,000 people suffer from type 2 diabetes and more than 2,300,000 are still diagnosed.
According to Carles "before coming to the island I was a little worried about the plague of snakes that inhabits Formentera but finally it has not been so and the mosquitoes have been the greatest enemies I have found."On the other hand, high day temperatures exceeding 30 degrees have been determining factors to have to maximize the rate of the path and avoid dehydration or heat stroke.
After several hours running to the problem of accumulated fatigue, intense pain in the left heel of the athlete was added that forced him to stop several times.Finally, after being about to leave 3 or 4 occasions, Carles Aguilar has managed to complete his adventure and now only thinks of resting and recovering physically and mentally as soon as possible.
Carles Aguilar has already carried out other important sports challenges in previous years such as in Soria with Templars Xtrem Trail running 190 km in 3 stages and 3,500 m of slope for mucopolysacaridosis;crossing the desert of the Monegros (Huesca) for 120 km for mental health or touring the entire Catalan coast from Port Bou to reach for 6 days and more than 400 km by cerebral palsy, among others.
The action has had the collaboration of Evenia Diabetes Care, a global company dedicated to improving the lives of people with diabetes through the development of innovative solutions that mark a positive difference in the daily life of people suffering from this disease.
Sunstar Gum has also participated, a company that especially cares about oral health and hygiene in diabetic people.Years of medical and dental research have demonstrated the relationship between diabetes and oral health.In patients with diabetes, many body systems and organs may be affected by various complications.
In addition, the material support of several firms specialized in running and sports health has been counted.
All this action has been channeled through the Diabetes Association of Catalonia.The objective has been to sensitize the population about diabetes in all its variants through a dissemination campaign in press, radio, television and social networks and, in parallel, give visibility to the aforementioned association that works to respond to the needs of those affectedand promotes the dissemination of this disease to prevent unwanted consequences and in many cases serious for the health of affected people.
