The artificial pancreas will allow the total control of diabetes in Spain in three years, according to the experts gathered in the V edition of the ‘Diabetes Experience Day’, which has recently been held in Barcelona coinciding with World Health Day.
This was stated by the head of the Endocrinology Service of the Clinic Hospital of Barcelona, Dr. Ignacio Conget, who explains that “researchers try to develop what is already known as an artificial pancreas, a system designed to achieve automatic control of theglucose figure through mathematical algorithms capable of interpreting glucose figures and fluctuations, in addition to making decisions automatically regarding insulin infusion without having to intervene the patient. ”
In this way, experts say that the cure of diabetes would be closer.
In the scientific meeting, other innovative investigations were announced by the researcher of the Biomedical Research Center in Diabetes Network (CIBERDEM) Joan Marc Servitjinsulin producing cells and, therefore, in the development of diabetes.This study is framed in the possibility of transplanting pancreatic cells for the future healing of type 1 diabetes.
Six million diabetics in Spain
Diabetes affects about six million people in Spain and causes about 25,000 deaths every year.In addition, it is behind seven out of 10 non -traumatic amputations of the lower extremities and is responsible for 16% of blindness cases.
Worldwide, there are 415 million people with diabetes throughout the planet and specialists say that in 2040 one in 10 adults will have the disease, which will mean 642 million people.
