A study carried out at the Harvard University Faculty of Medicine in the United States, has revealed that suffering diabetes for several years, without adequate control, decreases the cognitive capacity of patients, including learning, reasoning, care, care, memory, problem solving and decision making.
The brain requires adequate blood flow to guarantee the distribution of blood and thus fulfill its functions. However, in people with type 2 diabetes without metabolic control, an inflammation is generated because of high glucose levels that make blood vessels not properly regulate blood circulation throughout the organ.
This conclusion had already arrived a group of researchers from the Michoacana University of San Nicolás Hidalgo (UMSNH), whose scientific team led by Dr. Ixchel Herrera Guzmán studied the link between cognitive alterations and blood glucose control in members of aFamily Medicine Unit of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS)."High levels of blood sugar cause a reduction in blood flow in the central nervous system, so their functions are affected," said the researcher.
To perform the cognitive evaluations, various tests were used, such as a mental state miniexamen, drawing tests, depression level measurement, as well as the functional disability of the study participants.
Among the results was that more than a third of the patients obtained low ratings in the drawing tests, and those results were equal to those of the cognitive function, which suggests the existence of an association between cognitive and inadequate disorderBlood glucose control.
The doctor added that such findings indicate the importance of diabetes patients having good control of their glucose levels and monitoring symptoms that suggest cognitive problems, such as memory failures, learning, difficulty concentrating and decision making.
The specialist recommends following the medical indications regarding the taking of the drugs, following a healthy eating, practicing, monitoring glucose, quitting smoking and having an active mind through reading, memory games, crossword solution andWord games, and yoga practice.
