World Diabetes Day 2017, which annually summons the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) on November 14, this year gives special attention to diabetes problems in women.

Under the motto 'Women and Diabetes: Our right to a healthy future', in this edition it affects specially worrying data that affect the incidence and prevalence of the disease in the female sex, as well as in the particular consequences that thisHealth problem has in this part of the population.

Among others, specially overwhelming and worrying messages are pointed out: currently there are more than 199 million women living with diabetes and it is planned to increase up to 313 million by 2040.

One in 10 women around the world lives with diabetes and many do not have access to education, treatment and attention.Diabetes is the ninth main cause of death among women in the world, causing 2.1 million deaths every year. Two out of five women with diabetes are of reproductive age.One in 7 births is affected by gestational diabetes.

Given this situation, this year's campaign encourages "acting today to change tomorrow" and will promote the importance of affordable and equitable access to essential medicines and technologies, education for self -control and information required by all women at risk orthat live with diabetes so that they can achieve optimal results in the control of their diabetes, and reinforce their ability to prevent type 2 diabetes.

And it is that the dynamics of power, gender roles and socio -economic inequalities influence vulnerability to diabetes that women have when exposing them, for example, a poor diet and nutrition, physical inactivity and a delay in behaviorsof search for health care.

As usual, the Spanish Diabetes Society and the SED Foundation join this international campaign, focusing its actionsScientific, institutional and socio -health in a Spanish city.On this occasion, it will be Logroño that welcomes the main initiatives in this regard, with the development of a large number of activities from November 11 to 14.
