Erectile dysfunction by diabetes
According to Sergio Hernández Jiménez, coordinator of the Center for Comprehensive Care of the Patient with Diabetes of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ), a man with diabetes can have erectile dysfunction as a result of the disease.
Erectile dysfunction can occur in more than 60% of diabetes patients. This generates serious emotional problems, producing depression and anxiety, which makes adherence to the treatment and obtaining adequate control goals difficult.
Given this problem, the Secretary of Health seeks to prevent disease and its complications through timely detection and treatment, as well as reduce the incidence of the problem, which is currently 8.4% in men and 10.3% in women.
For this, the participation of patients and their relatives is necessary."We must not wait to present symptoms, since by then the disease is advanced," Hernández Jiménez warns.
How to prevent erectile dysfunction by diabetes?
The expert recommends that the entire population maintain healthy lifestyles, especially avoid excesses in food and sedentary lifestyle. It is also essential to carry out laboratory studies (glucose and lipid profile) if you have a first -degree relative with diabetes (father, mother, brothers), especially if it presents obesity or overweight.
It emphasizes that the Center for Comprehensive Care with Diabetes provides specialized services to people with this disease, through two intervention models:
- The curative
- The preventive
In the first, two,700 patients with diabetes diagnose, who have suffered complications due to the disease and require specialized care.
While in the preventive model, patient care is provided with less than five years of diagnosis and have not developed complications. This model seeks that people with diabetes be self -sufficient in the management of their disease and that they are trained to prevent complications. The center allows attention to the entire population regardless of their affiliation.
INCMNSZ performs multiple strategies around diabetes, such as genetic research and disease behavior, as well as preventive and educational campaigns in social networks.
Training models for health professionals who have the objective of changing the way to serve the patient with such disease are also managed.
