Intermittent fasting is not the best solution to lose weight

fer's profile photo   05/23/2018 5:34 p.m.

The so-called ‘intermittent fasting’ is a type of diet in which it refuses-voluntarily-any food to the body for 12-18 hours in a row or only 500 calories are ingested one or two days per week.

A diet that, increasingly popular among the population, allows rapid weight loss in the vast majority of cases. However, their results are not so ‘spectacular’ with the future of the weeks.

And it is that as some studies have concluded, up to 70% of the people who decide to fast ‘at times’ end up recovering the weight lost in the medium term. But it seems that the main problem with this type of diet does not have so much to do with body volume. And it is that as a study by the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) shows, intermittent diets impact very negatively on insulin activity, so they increase, and much, the risk of development of type 2 diabetes - andof other diseases.

As Ana Bonassa, director of this research presented in the framework of the XX Congress of the European Endocrinology Society (ESA) explained in Barcelona, “ours is the first work to show that, despite the weight loss, diets based on intermittent fasting damage the pancreas and affect the function of insulin in healthy individuals, which can lead to the development of diabetes and other serious pathologies ».

long -term effects

Type 2 diabetes is a disease caused by the organism's inability to produce sufficient insulin amounts or to use this hormone in an ‘adequate’ way.And since this hormone synthesized in the pancreas is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels, the circulatory torrent ends up carrying an excess of glucose that, in the long run, ends up damaging multiple organs throughout the body.

A disease suffered by about 400 million people around the world and whose appearance is directly associated with obesity. So much so that one of the first measures that patients with diabetes should adopt is to change their dietary habits to lose weight.Or what is the same, get diet. However, it seems that intermittent fasting is not the most appropriate option.

In this context, intermittent fasting is a type of diet that in recent years has gained a large number of followers eager to lose weight. All this despite the fact that the evidence about its effectiveness is, at least, contradictory. And it is of no use to lose a weight that will end up recovering after a few months. But there is even more.It is not yet known if this type of food may or may not be harmful in the long term. And the indications point out that it is like this: different studies have found that this intermittent fasting can produce reactive oxygen species - the consolidated ‘free radicals’ - whose accumulation is very harmful to cells.

Long -term intermittent diets are beta cells of pancreatic islets, responsible for insulin production
In the new study, the authors resorted to an animal model - adults - to which they submitted to an intermittent fasting for a period of three months. And what they saw is that, as expected, the animals lost weight and ended up reducing their food intake. But the results did not end here. And it is that the loss of fat was not ‘uniform’.In fact, animals experienced an increase in abdominal fat.And what is more important, the authors observed considerable damage in the beta cells of the pancreatic islets - this is, the cells responsible for producing insulin - caused by an increase in free radical levels and an elevation of the markers ofInsulin resistance.

Take withCaution

In short, it seems that intermittent fasting can reduce the body's ability to produce insulin and use this hormone in a ‘correct’ way.Negative effects that could induce long -term the appearance of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases.T

This is how, waiting for subsequent investigations that confirm - or reflects - these results, the authors request caution before potential users decide to eat and fast discontinued, especially in the case of patients who already suffer from a pathologyMetabolic - certainly common situation in the population with obesity.

As Ana Bonassa concludes, «we should consider that the population with overweight or obesity that chooses to follow a diet based on intermittent fasting already has insulin resistance. Therefore, and although this diet can induce rapid weight loss, it could also cause very serious damage to long -term health, in case of the development of type 2 diabetes ».

Then the type1 can do it since we have no islets that manufacture insulin. No?

And the strange thing is that Muslims practicing Ramadan (intermittent fast) do not have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes

Well there are many other studies that say otherwise and have found benefits in fasting up to 72 hours. From there and if it seems that it is problematic.I think it is an issue that is not yet clear, more studies are needed.
The problem of doing it with rats is that they are animals with a very short life and a fasting of 18 hours for them equals several days of a human so it is not very reliable. To see it well they would have to be studies with humans.

Hmm.There are many studies that say the opposite and there are explanations with a lot of sense. The body not receiving food for many hours, uses the reserves that the liver has, with the help of the pancreas, producing glucagon.

Even yourself can measure it ... for example a prediabetic with 120 fasting glucose, when you will explode fasting 140 or until 160 but that glucose does not come from food, but from the fat of the liver. In the intermittent fasting, fat burns to turn it into energy, that is why it works to lose weight, and when losing weight and eliminate fat, improve blood pressure, blood lipid level, triglyceride andThe balance of insulin use, etc.

And not only that, but there is a notable increase in energy since cells begin to absorb glucose as it should.

And it is true, I have been doing intermittent fasting 16/8 for 2 months in quarantine and I have lost weight, I have improved my glucose levels and especially I feel more energy, as I did not feel years ago. With telling you that I live in a building and first I just wanted to use elevator now I am eager to use staircase, play with my children etc.

My goal (and so we see if it works) is to go down to levels so adequate that allow me to go down the medication (volume 500 metformin every 12 hours) and my goal is that it goes down to 1 pill and then eliminate it.

I will tell you.

I also take the opportunity that intermittent fasting is not a diet but a feeding scheme. It is also important to give priority to feed with protein and vegetables, lower carbohydrate consumption (carbohydrates).I leave you a useful link: Link benefits-salud/31112

I have tried to lower weight and it has not worked for me.

Having continuous basal insulin, the body always detects blood insulin and does not manage fat burning to generate energy due to lack of blood carbohydrates.

I only did it during the diabetic debut, with total absence of blood insulin.Lower weight and generate ketone bodies.

The best, in my opinion, is a balanced diet to the measure of each person, according to their lifestyle.

It is another option, neither better nor worse in general terms.
What happens that you always have to see the type of population, and of course that for a diabetic it is not the best option.

That is why it is important that diabetic people who want to lose weight, know that this is another option, and that they can lose weight in many other ways.

When I wrote the post was prediabetic. The intermittent fast led me to be DB2 diabetic. That was what my doctor confirmed, that diabetics or people prone to being should not make intermittent fasting.

I practice intermittent fasting, 13 or 14 hours and I have not lost weight or half a gram. But it serves me because the morning has happened much better and I endure until eating without hypoglycemia.
Daily, I get up at 06:45, I take a tea and then breakfast at 11. That way, I get well to the food I do about 15:20.
I have practiced it for some years, before debuting in D1.Before I had breakfast at home and then took a second breakfast, usually coffee with milk and spent the whole morning starving, without energy and reached the faint food and ended up pecking.
At first it cost me, even half an hour before breakfast I had no reading understanding, I was super lazy. But in a couple of months I got used to it and I no longer conceive of breakfast so early, with haste to leave home and then have to take some some because 9 hours between breakfast and food is a burial.
I consulted my endocrine if with diabetes I could follow that guideline and it seemed good.
Intermittent fasting is not a method to lose weight, it has other benefits that make it very interesting.I discovered it by two YouTube channels: Doctor La Rosa and Borja Flag. They also recommend it in "potential life."The three are solid profiles, doctors in medicine, argue scientifically and have convinced me.
With diabetes I also do not consider expanding the fasting window beyond 14 hours, because as Ruthbia says, having "exogenous" insulin the organism cannot react like that of a healthy person.

In my case, I have been fasting for several months and I am doing very well.I have removed breakfast, I just drink coffee only so it is easy for me.At first I lost 3 kg quite fast and I have kept there, which for me perfect because I recovered the weight before the two pregnancies and that I could not get.In addition, I have not had to make diet or take away food (apart from the toast of breakfast) so it is easy for me to maintain.Apart from that, it is that in the morning is when I have more insulin resistance and I avoid the peak of the post-deseayuno.My endocrine, if I do well for my levels, then phenomenal ....

Before pregnancy I fast 16 hours and sometimes some of 24 and no problem. With the slow well adjusted the glucose remained without problems.I do not lose weight with fasts because the other two meals make them strong. In pregnancy I went to 3 meals because I could not eat a lot of once and then with breastfeeding at the beginning I was very hungry and continued with 3 meals. Now that my son has almost a year and takes less than a few days I skip the dinner if I am not hungry and only make breakfast and food. Also because I go to sleep very soon and I do not feel like dinner many days, when Ceno is a pair of yogurts with nuts at 7 in the afternoon, it is more snack than anything else. And then I make breakfast and strong food.
I have not lost anything either, but with pregnancy I did not take anything weight, so I do not need to go down.

Hello Ruthbia, this is an issue that has always generated doubts because I do not have clear things at all, it is supposed to with active insulin we cannot lose weight? What is sure to make muscle because of the fact that hyperglycemia take fat from muscles

I did a 5 -day fasting, not intermittent, and I noticed that since I did that fast, I get fat with much more easily. It seems that my metabolism lowered.I regret having done it, although now I know what I should not do.It is really frustrating to see the amount of contradictory opinions about the matter. Some say that fasting is recommended because many cultures practice it;Others that are not good for the body to be so long without eating food ... there is a lot of confusion.
It is true that the body knows how to adapt to periods of starvation, but they are that, hard periods of survival that how much less they have, the better.
It is my opinion.

Muscle if I do, it's a matter of doing weights and gap.And I notice that the need for insulin lowers me.
To be able to lose weight, carbohydrates must be reduced, enter into controlled ketosis with a professional, then if the body burns fat.But for a limited period of time and then upload hydrates inputs according to each one to stay.

To me the fast does not work for me, but each body is a world.

PuffffI am trying this new point to improve insulin resistance.I don't know what to do anymore.I simply do not lower my basal insulin :( I have a strict low carbohydrate diet, and if my glucose improved, but basal insulin remains the same.
