10% of the elements of the Mexico Armed Forces suffer from diabetes, the main cause of death registered in the Military Hospital, said Emmanuel Martínez Lara, director of the Medical Specialties Unit of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).
During the inauguration of the International Congress of Obesity and Diabetes that perform the Sedena, together with the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Ministry of Health (SSA) and the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) for elements of the Armed Forces, MartínezLara indicated that in the medical specialties unit, nine thousand patients with diabetes are treated on average.
Due to the high figures, the Armed Forces implemented the delivery of workshops and awareness courses for patients and their families.
He stressed that the Epidemic of Diabetes in Mexico has meant expenses that threaten to collapse the budgets of the health authorities.
"Mexico occupies the second place in obesity worldwide making it a public health problem, due to its magnitude and transcendence has caused huge expenses in Mexico, calculating approximately 42 thousand 246 million pesos and an expense is projected for this year of 771,919 million, which threatens to collapse the budgets of the health authorities, "he said.
He stressed that "in Latin America, in 2000, 13.3 million patients with diabetes were discussed. It is estimated that this figure will increase to about 33 million by 2030, which represents an increase of 148%."
