The Quirónsalud Valencia Pediatrics Service has signed a collaboration agreement with the Valencian Association of Diabetes, thanks to which fathers and mothers of children diagnosed with diabetes in this hospital receive assistance from volunteers in their early days, as well as support to theReceive medical discharge, reports the health center in a statement.
In Spain, they remember, there is no national record of all cases of type 1 diabetes mellitus, which is the most frequently affects the population of pediatric age.
But, according to current estimates, this disease affects about 10,000 children under 15 and 1,200 new cases are diagnosed every year.
As for the most affected age, Dr. Almudena Navarro, an endocrinologist of the Pediatrics Service of the Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital, affirms that "although it can manifest at any time of childhood or adolescence, in recent years the age of the debut has beenadvanced, especially in children under 5 years. "
In recent years, more cases of diabetes and earlier ages are being diagnosed."Among the causes - explains Dr. Navarro - are a more sensitized health personnel and general population, which allows a more precocious diagnosis and treatment, facts that are of vital importance since the risk of future complications decreases to a large extent".
For its diagnosis, it is enough to make the child a capillary blood glucose test that consists of measuring blood glucose through a simple test by extraction of a simple drop of blood from the finger.
The origin of the disease is multifactorial: "On the one hand there is the genetic predisposition of each person and on the other hand the environmental factors, which can sometimes be triggered, such as the presence of viral infections," says Dr. Navarro. Its initial symptoms are usually polyuria, which manifests when the child urine many times and even in bed during the night;Polydipsia, when the child is thirsty and is constantly drinking water;and an obvious loss of weight. It is the triad known as the 3P, "says the doctor.
Support "from the first moment"
For the proper management of the disease, Dr. Navarro advises adequate learning from the beginning, by the child and family, of the different aspects that influence the patient, such as diet, exercise and insulin to obtainA good self -control and avoid, as far as possible, the appearance of complications in the future.
"Thanks to this initiative - says Concha Aguilar, volunteer coordinator of the Valencian Association of Diabetes - you can offer tranquility, empathy, compression and emotional support from the volunteers who have already started this path long ago."
"From a perspective as patients and having day -to -day experience with diabetes, it is collaborated with health professionals in the approach of this disease, in view of the fact that at the emotional level, in the beginning, it can be very hard,"concludes.
