Some 700 specialists in internal medicine and endocrinology throughout Spain meet on January 27 and 28 at the XI Diabetes and Obesity Meeting of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), which will have as a framework the Palace of Congresses of Torremolinos.
At the work table of this scientific meeting will be the study of the new generation of DPP-4 enzyme inhibitors and the SGLT2 protein cotransporter, as well as agonists recepting GLP-1, whose incorporation in treatments improve theGlycemic control of patients with less risk of hypoglycemia, one of the most serious complications of diabetes.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) of 2016, 8.5 percent of the world's population, or what is the same 422 million adults are diabetic, most in developing countries.This number has multiplied case for four times since 1980 and between the factors that have contributed to this drastic increase are overweight and obesity.
In the case of Spain, 3 percent of the total deaths recorded in Spain in 2016 were due to direct cause of diabetes, with a total of 10,420 deaths.In 2014 and according to WHO data, more than 1 in 3 adults (over 18) were overweight, and more than one in 10 were obese.Among the complications of diabetes are myocardial infarctions, brain vascular accidents, blindness, renal failure and amputations of the lower limbs.
