Some 700 specialists in internal medicine and endocrinology throughout Spain meet in this event.

Pharmacological research in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which affects the largest number of people and largely linked to excess weight and physical inactivity, crosses in recent years one of its most prolific and effective stages. These advances already allow, in practice, to apply individualized treatments to patients based on their therapeutic needs and objectives.

Some 700 specialists in internal medicine and endocrinology throughout Spain meet on January 27 and 28 at the XI Diabetes and Obesity Meeting of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), which will have as a framework the Palace of Congresses of Torremolinos.

At the work table of this scientific meeting will be the study of the new generation of DPP-4 enzyme inhibitors and the SGLT2 protein cotransporter, as well as agonists recepting GLP-1, whose incorporation in treatments improve theGlycemic control of patients with less risk of hypoglycemia, one of the most serious complications of diabetes.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) of 2016, 8.5 percent of the world's population, or what is the same 422 million adults are diabetic, most in developing countries. This number has multiplied case for four times since 1980 and between the factors that have contributed to this drastic increase are overweight and obesity.

In the case of Spain, 3 percent of the total deaths recorded in Spain in 2016 were due to direct cause of diabetes, with a total of 10,420 deaths. In 2014 and according to WHO data, more than 1 in 3 adults (over 18) were overweight, and more than one in 10 were obese.Among the complications of diabetes are myocardial infarctions, brain vascular accidents, blindness, renal failure and amputations of the lower limbs.

There are three great forms of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, and those who suffer from it need the daily insulin administration to survive.Type 2 diabetes is the most frequent, and is largely due to excess weight and physical inactivity. Before it only affected adults, but now it is increasingly frequent in children and young people.Gestational diabetes is a temporary condition that occurs in pregnancy and entails a long -term risk of type 2 diabetes.

The XI Diabetes and Obesity Meeting will be inaugurated at 7'15 00 hours on Friday, January 27, although the extensive work program consisting of 15 presentations, update sessions, master conferences and round tables by Spanish specialists,And also from Italy and Canada, it will begin at 4:00 p.m.

@Alberto_13, because they are for specialists in endocrinology, which are the ones who put the treatments. You will inform you of your doctor.
And if new insulins or better treatments come out, we will all benefit.
The important thing is to keep going the investigation
