The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) warns that the number of people affected by diabetes in Europe has increased by 8.8%.These data are extracted from the 8th Atlas edition of IDF diabetes, in which it is estimated that the number of people affected by the disease is increased by 10.2% to 2045.
In Spain, diabetes is the fourth cause of mortality among women, just behind the group of circulatory system diseases, tumors and respiratory system diseases.This has been revealed by the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FEDE), within the framework of the celebration of World Diabetes Day (DMD), whose motto this year is precisely "Diabetes and Women."
In our country, about 30% (29.8%) of women between 61 and 75 years suffer from type 2;percentage that exceeds 40% (41.3%) from 75 years.And although this pathology, which affects about 6 million people in Spain, is more prevalent among men, health complications are much greater for them than for them.In this sense, women have 30% more possibilities of stroke, with the same treatment;154 % more risk of coronary heart disease;and 44% more risk of developing kidney disease.In addition, in type 1 diabetes, mortality is 37% more compared to men.
This year the objective is to increase awareness of diabetes in women and publicize the causes, symptoms, treatment and complications associated with pregnancy and reproductive stage.In addition, this day has the purpose of promoting affordable and equitable access to essential treatments and technologies, as well as education for the self -control of pathology and prevention of type 2 diabetes in female population

In this same report, the IDF also highlights that more than one million children and adolescents live today with type 1 diabetes, that is to say with the autoimmune version of the disease.While the care and attention of diabetes continues to improve, the cost of treating the growing number of people living with diabetes has reached $ 727 billion (12% of world health spending).In Spain, this year's expenses are expected to be exceeding 5,809 million euros.
Although many countries have taken public health measures on diabetes, IDF still provides that one in two adults (more than 212 million people) with diabetes remains without diagnosing in the world.
