The Melilla Diabetics Association (Adimel) yesterday alerted the increase in minors suffering from type 1 diabetes, since 34 new cases were diagnosed throughout the last year, which becomes at least one or twodetections every 15 days. This was noted by Hannah Mohamed, a member of this entity, who said that the hospitable 'debut' of these children, of an average of 10 years, was fast thanks to the care of the parents, which allows a more effective control than in thecase of adults, who tend to carefet periodic controls.
Along these lines, the territorial director of the Institute of Health Management (Ingesa), Francisco Robles, estimated that about 8,000 Melillenses adults suffer from diabetes, 15-16% more than the national average. However, Robles regretted that this figure is only "the tip of the iceberg" and raised the number to 12,000 diabetics, since "many do not know they are."Hence the need to do glycemia periodic analyzes such as those proposed at the informative tables that will install in different parts of the city next week on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated on Tuesday 14. In fact, MohamedHe affirmed that last year 124 Melillenses discovered that they were diabetics with the blood glucose analysis at these tables.
Regarding the causes of this higher percentage of diabetics in Melilla, and also in Ceuta, Robles pointed out the particularities of the population of both autonomous cities. On the one hand he indicated the genetic cause as the main factor, but also referred to dietary elements characteristic of Melilla and Ceuta, where gastronomy includes recipes for "Muslim tradition", in which sugar is very present.
On the other hand, the Ingesa director announced that the health service currently has 57 insulin pumps and that it is working on the implementation of intradermal sensors. These sensors control patient insulin levels 24 hours a day and avoid having to click.Robles hopes to improve this service and implement the ‘pump pack and intradermal sensor as soon as possible.
