A school united against diabetes

The teachers of the Lope de Vega control the glucose to an eight -year -old student.

They say they don't even have to look, they understand each other with a slight head movement.Carlos Díaz, a tutor of a third -party class of the Lope de Vega school, has a kind of telepathy with one of his students, Ainoa Rodríguez, eight years old.

Only a small gesture serves for the girl to go to the bottom of the class and begin a routine that repeats, at least three times on each class.Grab a strip, puncture on the finger and blood to the machine. It is the only way to measure your glucose levels.

Ainoa was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June, the most common in children. This disease occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin, the hormone that is needed to wear blood sugar (glucose) to cells.Diabetics must undergo periodic controls to monitor their insulin levels, since excess or lack of sugar can cause serious health problems.

The Board protocol forces a responsible teacher in health matters.

Ainoa's life and her family completely changed since then.«The girl hurt her head a lot and lost 14 kilos. An analysis was made and they entered that same day, ”says Isabel Gallardo, mother of the little one.At first we had a total ignorance of the disease, it was a jug of cold water ».After the diagnosis, doctors referred Ainoa to a hospital in Seville, where an endocrine taught his parents to deal with the disease and monitor insulin levels."On the second day they gave her the control apparatus and told her that it was going to be another finger for her," says the mother.

Then came the transfer to the child's mother and after almost a month of income, Ainoa was discharged.«When we returned to Badajoz I communicated at school what had happened and told them that the girl was going to need to be controlled in class. My husband and I was very distressed, I even thought about leaving the work to do the controls, ”says Isabel. As during the rest of the day, diabetic children must undergo exhaustive and newspaper glucose controls.Teachers have to be trained to monitor them and interpret their symptoms, and should know how to act if they suffer a decrease or a sugar rise. But what for Isabel and her husband, Eugenio, was a problem at first, then became tranquility."When I arrived at school they opened my arms and explained that I was not going to have any problem," says the mother.

The center's direction, headed by Ismael Pérez, got to work since he met the diagnosis of Ainoa. For cases of students with diabetes, the Board of Extremadura has a protocol since 2011. First, as reported by the regional executive, the nearest health center (the downtown area of Badajoz) must appoint a nurse for the case.

Then, in the school itself an educational educational reference is designated. It is a teacher who, voluntarily, contacts the parents and the nurse, supervises the controls and monitors that there is sugar or sugar drinks for diabetic children.

monitoring

In the Lope de Vega, the reference professor for health matters is the Head of Studies, Germán Lozano.«The mother saw in July that our disposition was good. The Board protocol is quite complete and has a series of guidelines. We also contacted the General Directorate of Health and after three days they brought us a refrigerator, ”he explains.

That fridge is installed in the Ainoa class. There they keep juices, liquid yogurts or cookies;foods that cause their glucose levels to rise when a decrease occurs. In addition, there is also insulin and glucagon, an emergency medicine to climb the sugar.

The center also has two devices for glucose measurements. With them and thanks to the supervision of the teachers, Ainoa is always controlled. To start training, the tutor and the head of studies received a manual, and in addition, the girl's mother went to school for two weeks to help in adaptation.«They understood me perfectly, so I started my work again.I know that here is controlled, as at home, ”explains Isabel, who reiterates his thanks to the teachers and the director of the center.

During these two months of course, Ainoa has undergone at least three daily controls in class. The first is done at ten in the morning, three hours after breakfast."If at that time the girl has a descent, she is given a juice or an actimel or a cookie, which are rapid absorption hydrates for the body," explains the mother.

The most important controls are carried out before and after physical education classes. If you have low glucose, the girl must wait to do sports.«You always have to ask and see how she is.In case of doubt, click him.The day that has high glucose and we do sports, we take advantage to burn, ”says Germán.

Integration

Communication between the head of studies and the girl's tutor is constant."See you and look like brokers from the bag, we are always saying numbers to see if it has climbed or lowered glucose," explains the tutor.

The child's response to the disease was another of Isabel's concerns.«At first he wondered why she had touched this disease or if she was going to be different from the rest of the children, but she caught all the information. His life has only changed that he has to do his controls and carry his insulin, ”says Isabel.

In class, Ainoa is one more and now he is even more loved by his teammates.«It shows that he has won in maturity, has made a gigantic leap. The classmates are very mentalized and we have even used to explain the pancreas in class, ”says the tutor.«Children accept that physical education classes cannot start directly. They know that they have to wait five minutes for Ainoa to test. And they even ask how much he has given, ”adds Germán.

The mother does not stop thanking the support of the teachers."I have spoken with other parents who have told me that in schools they have not taken care of their children," he explains. The teachers, however, are limited to pointing out that they only comply with the Board protocol.

Many schools should take example.
We have also been very lucky with the Cole de María, you see, we call luck something that should be normal.

They just sent it to wassap and I have only said ... God that envies! Then, although they have a written protocol, I have to take the decision.I think there should be such a protocol in all communities, just like the issue of nurse in school ...

We in primary had a greater commitment on the part of the school.Since it is in high school, each course I will talk to the corresponding tutor and the faces are a poem, or they tell me that they already know what the subject is going because they have studied it, or they have no idea.Good that Iago is autonomous and is measured, because what I transmit to each tutor I think should be transmitted to all teachers in a joint tutoring. What I should do is ask for a meeting with each and every one of the teachers, but it is so long that I could not, so I try to trust the tutor to transmit it to their classmates ...:

@Enma, when I ask for the meeting, there are all the teachers. That year there were even two teachers that my daughter does not have, by the subject of options, but as they are third teachers of ESO, they were equally.

@Rociolinares because that is lucky, I call that I predisposition and it seems fundamental that I would have for all the cabbage and all the teachers, because you never know when there will be a new case or when it would be necessary to help

Look today coming from Ole the girl has told me that she had told her teacher that she was tired and I say it: and the apparatus has happened to you? No and has given you cookie? He has not warned me? Either ... then ... thenI have seen that in the graph she has had low before lunch ... tomorrow I hope to talk to her and how to tell me that if that said the girl ... I don't know what I do !!
It has a written protocol and says that if at 10:30 (Time of the first measureAnd he didn't give it anything ... another descent of the graph ...
Anyway, every time I trust less and I am more indignant. How much does it cost to do it well?
At least he has told me that tomorrow, they have a career, that if he gives it something before or how we do (even though I already thought I would say it)

@Mariah14, it is so difficult to fight that, but we have no choice ........ From time to time you have to refresh their memory. And as you say it is fundamental, and I don't think it's so difficult to show a bit of interest. It is clear that they do not have to know how to act, but they do not want, at least they pay attention to the girl and consult you what to do !!

Hello!!@Rociollinares when I ask for meeting with the tutor is unique and exclusively with him.If I asked with the rest of the teachers, surely more than one could not want to come, more or less what there is and abounds the "I cannot", "it is not good for me" ... they do not seem to themSo important, and it is.
@Mariah14 seems to me that it is not so difficult to give them a little attention, so even as you are? Do you still tired?
I think we do not ask for knowledge about the disease but knowing how to act, if they are tired, if they see them weird. It doesn't seem so difficult for me.They do not have to count rations, or administer insulin, just look at how they are ...: -H

@Enma we are as always, unfortunately everything depends on the interest that each teacher and each school put.I am lucky that I ask for the meeting before commissioning the course, and the tutor this year called us the first day and at the end of classes, so that all teachers were available. It was great, all pointing in their agendas, computers, tablets ..... and asking a lot of doubts.Hopefully one day, you and all parents, have it as easy as us !!!

@Enma effectively does not seem so difficult and more having written guidelines or in doubt, my phone. At first it called me more for doubts now says that it takes longer to call and what I do than to do something ...
Today I ask if the girl said yesterday that she was tired and told me that if and that as there was little for lunch she gave it and I said that please if she said that would leave her the little appearance that the girl knows how to pass it alone and you know that I answer meWhat if it was x fostering the autonomy of the girl is worth but that the reading in the end had to do it (obvious with three years is learning the numbers now ...) and I have said that it would be good to check it because it is a descentWith lunch I do not go back quickly and would have to give it first juice .... well the same cantinela always ...
Anyway ... we will endure this year and the next one we will see (surely change of school because the teacher is the same 3 years of children), I will try to speak with directors and teachers before enrolling it for seeing the panorama and ... a ...Pray for touching a willing teacher !!

And although the school already commented and read your opinions now I would like to ask you about family members.? In my case if and it hurts a lot because my mother is.He has always been stubborn and with character but I never thought that I would feel so little supported by her in this ... I understand whether uneasiness, her anguish, etc. But not that it renounces everything related to this and the only thing that knows how to say is that ifThere is already an appointment and that my daughter has a misfortune for her life

In my case, my mother was the greatest support. So it should be.
And at school, of course it will be very helpful if there are teachers in charge, but do not forget that the important thing is to get nurses in schools, because it is a healthcare professional who should attend to these children.

Hello!!My mother does worry, the poor! When we are going to eat always call me to ask if Iago can eat this or that. She knows what she has but does not know as well as managing and due to her age I don't ask for more.My great support has been my sister -in -law who, being my allergic nephew, has been our great support pillar. In his home Iago can always run out of problems. My mother -in -law also does what she can but sometimes she forgets that Iago cannot eat so many hydrates in the food and we have to walk vigilant not to happen, because there is always dessert, with little sugar but with sugar and after so manyHydrates of which Iago enjoys in a way that you do not imagine.A lot of insulin is always click on Sundays, which is the day we eat with her, to be able to eat everything but yet we do not get rid of a super climb that she scares. And there is also no one to ask how it goes or how it carries it (in my husband's family).Luckily in my family if they ask more and care a little more about their health. That it is not that they think that they do not want it but that they have already forgotten because we normalize it so much that this causes others to forget.
From school I expect little, I am calm because she is autonomous and my best friend is a child of Infant Alli and if something happens she will be to the removal, but there is no doubt that she is in children and the high school and the distance is obvious. But if Iago needs something, he does not hesitate to ask them to call her and she knows how to help her or if she calls me.He is a person who implies a lot with his students since until recently they had a child in diabetic children and although it was not his teacher, he is aware of everything because he wanted to learn the management of diabetes both for this little boy and for Iago.
Thanks for making way to me a bit ....: -H

I am a teacher and diabetic.Well, I had a diabetic student too and suffered a lot, because at breakfast time his mother always threw a bowling or some industrial pastries.I talked to her, but I couldn't change her way of thinking and acting. The girl never did controls. To avoid this I had a class meeting with all parents and I told them that it was totally forbiddento eat healthy and not to be damaged so much your health.
