The practice of regular physical exercise is one of the pillars of diabetes treatment since it has been shown that it prevents the appearance of type 2 diabetes among the general population and could contribute to improve control in people with type 1 and 2 diabetes.
In fact, people with diabetes can compete in all kinds of sports tests controlling their blood glucose levels and improving their insulin sensitivity.
For this reason, the Madrid Diabetics Association and the Diabetes Foundation organize the Popular race and walk for diabetes and expodiabetes, a solidarity event that brings together all types of audiences and that has become the largest related sporting eventWith this disease that is celebrated nationally.
The 5th race and popular walk for diabetes and expodiabetes, which will be held on November 20 at the Camoens promenade of the Park of Western Madrid, also involves the final brooch to commemorative activities around the World Diabetes Day.
Among the beneficial effects that the practice of physical exercise has on people with diabetes are:
- Improves the sensitivity of insulin in tissues.
- Increases the use of glucose by the muscles.
- Energy expenditure increases and helps control body weight and prevent obesity.
- Reduces the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.
Serafín Murillo, an advisor in nutrition and sports of the Diabetes Foundation and the Association of Diabetics of Madrid, explained that “people with diabetes who initiate a physical training program improve their blood glucose levels, and therefore theirDiabetes, in some cases similar to the effect produced by some drugs. ”
Therefore, this expert has developed a series of recommendations for people with diabetes to improve their physical condition gradually:
Perform a physical activity that adapts to the characteristics of each person, their tastes and preferences.
If it is possible to perform physical activity daily.If it were not possible, it is advisable to practice at 4 or 5 weekly sessions.The objective is to exceed 150 per week.
Start the practice of physical exercise with basic activities such as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle (static).The training should be initiated progressively and an adaptation should be carried out gradually increasing the duration of each session.
Control the intensity of the exercises by means of the heart rate through a pulsometer or directly telling the beats per minute with the aim of avoiding injuries or the risk of cardiovascular problems.
Also train muscle strength.It is recommended to combine the aerobic type exercise (walking, bicycle or swimming) with other muscle strength exercises.Specifically, a program of 2 or 3 weekly sessions of force exercise is advised, with a duration of between 30 and 40 minutes per session, always done at a moderate intensity.
Attention to the appearance of hypoglycemia during or after exercise in those people treated with insulin or drugs that can produce hypoglycemia.To avoid it it is necessary to reduce insulin dose or increase the intake of foods rich in carbohydrates.Consult your health team about how to adapt your treatments to the practice of physical exercise.
