Type 1 diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune entity, of generally abrupt start, in which the human organism produces antibodies that destroy the beta cells of the pancreas, which produce insulin, the hormone that guarantees the transport of glucose from the blood to the cells to the cells.
More than 100 holguineros under 15 live with diabetes, a situation that will accompany them throughout their lives and that requires multidisciplinary attention to prevent chronic complications and offer them a better quality of life.
Numerous health actions are carried out with these patients, one of them, the coexistence for children and young people with diabetes, which these days have its stage at the Diabetic Care Center, in Holguin.
This center welcomes children of the municipality of Holguín during this week, in a project that takes place in collaboration with the Octavio Pediatric Hospital of La Concepción and La Pedraja, where education to patients and family members constitutes its primary objective, explains Dr. MartaMacks Velázquez.
Endocrinologists, dietitians, nurses, stomatologists, specialists in nutrition, podiatry, psychology, physical culture and ophthalmology integrate the multidisciplinary team that with great professionalism and dedication offers their experiences to these children and their family.
The project aims to promote self -care and improve the quality of life and is aimed at patients already diagnosed and consists in developing specific workshops with the health professionals involved to agree on a unit message and schedule the activities that will be carried out together, said the specialist.
