Different optics
In Congress the projects were awarded with 105,000 euros.Three of them with 25,000 euros, money raised exclusively through beneficial events held in different parts of Spain by the association since its creation in 2014, while the other three investigating groups received 10,000 euros each, thanks to the support of the FoundationThirst for the Spanish Diabetes Society.
These works, which currently receive other sources of public or private financing have from now on with the support of the Diabetes Zero Association, whose directive is being advised by a scientific committee that has been in charge of selecting the finalist projects. This wise panel is composed of doctors Ramón Gomis,IDIBAPS director and president of the SED Foundation of the Spanish Diabetes Society;Luis Castaño, director of the Biocruces Research Laboratory of Bilbao, and Manuel Aguilar, head of Endocrinology of the Puerta del Mar de Cádiz hospital.
The purpose of the clinical trials that are financed is to end child diabetes, but from different optics. While one of the projects aims to reprogram the skin's skin cells to achieve new Beta Beta cells of insulin, another investigations, for example, seeks to regulate the immune system and thus automatically regenerate beta cells destroyed when the autoimmune attack begins. The provincial coordinator in Malaga explains that it will be the scientific advisory committee that determines future investments in view of the results presented by the research groups in the second edition of the Congress.
«After this first meeting, zero diabetes at the national level continues to work with more enthusiasm if possible, because people have become aware that research must be pushed. Our work will now focus on gathering money again to continue supporting these lines of work and hold a second meeting next year, ”explains the provincial coordinator in Malaga.
