In a statement, he explained that the cause of gestational diabetes lies in the hormonal changes of pregnancy, “from week 12 increases the sugar available in the blood, in order to provide the baby with the energy it needs: the fetusHe uses his mother's sugar because he is not able to generate it by himself. ”
Therefore, he said that a controlled diet must be maintained in sugars because the concentration of blood glucose remains high for longer than normal after meals (two hours, instead of one).
He stressed that this does not mean that all women in gestation suffer from diabetes, "if the glycemia values do not exceed the limits considered-risk-, the future mother may be calm, because there will be no complications in pregnancy," he said.
He informed that of the 19,327 pregnant women who attended the first time consultation, only 1.8 percent (347) present diabetes mellitus, so he stressed the importance of food at this stage since it affects directly on the correct formation and development of the development of thefetus.
He also recommended performing moderate physical activity such as swimming, yoga, or walking, since exercise will improve cardiovascular and muscle condition, blood pressure and protect from gestational diabetes.
"In addition to avoiding excessive weight increase, digestive discomforts and constipation decreases, increase psychological well -being by reducing anxiety, depression and insomnia," he said.
He pointed out that during pregnancy tobacco, alcohol and self -medication should be avoided, as well as decrease the consumption of sugars, caffeine, fats and maintain proper hydration.
He urged the pregnant women, who in case of presenting symptoms such as: headaches (headache), blurred vision, phosphenes (lucecitas) and tinnitus (zumbido of ears), swelling of feet or bleeding, immediately go to their closest medical unit.
