The El Ángel Children's Diabetes Unit offered last Friday a talk to parents whose children have debuted in type 1 diabetes recently to give support and information about how they should act.In the encounter, which was moderated by psychologist Pilar Rueda, doubts, myths and beliefs about life habits were clarified after the diabetic debut.Family members and professors of minors with type 1 diabetes also attended.
Those responsible for the unit, doctors Patricia Sierra and Aurora Tables, consider the formation of patients and their environment as one of the keys to success."The involvement of the family is fundamental," they said.
When the debut of a child with diabetes occurs, a learning process begins in which it is necessary to know all the symptoms that cause both the increase and the decrease in blood glucose levels. The diet must be adapted, exercise is a conditioning and insulin must be administered periodically based on how blood glucose varies in each patient.
This whole process is complicated when the patient is a minor. In the case of the little ones due to lack of awareness and in that of adolescents it is usually due to rebellion and the non -acceptance of this new condition.Pilar Rueda stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination of all people around minors with diabetes. It is estimated that 30,000 children suffer from diabetes mellitus in Spain.Every year 1,100 minors become part of that list.
