Researchers at the Nanosciences and Nanotechnology Center of the UNAM in Ensenada, Baja California, developed a solution of silver nanoparticles to disinfect and facilitate the healing of diabetic foot ulcers, with which more than 90 percent of their patients have healed.
In a statement from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the researcher Nina Bogdanchikova explained that said product, known as Nagsil Dermo, allowed to save the lower extremities of people who would be amputated.
"From 2011 to date the application has avoided mutilation in 100 individuals," said the researcher.
Nagsil Dermo, marketed for a year, was developed after the expert of Russian origin and her team analyzed the bactericidal, antiviral, fungicidal and scar nanoparticles (AGNPS) properties.
"We have developed a non -toxic nanomaterial in high concentrations, it is not allergenic or has bacterial or fungal resistance. In addition, it has international certificates from the Nanotoxicity Committee, which makes it unique in the market," he said.
The product, whose presentation is in Aerosol, can also be used in pressure ulcers, severe acne and difficult healing wounds in patients with AIDS.
For its application it is necessary a diagnosis that indicates the level of gravity of the patient's foot.In this way, if it is in the first three phases in older adults, the treatment can last up to three months.
In young people it will be necessary to apply for two weeks; However, if you are in the fourth phase, the amputation will be inevitable, the house of studies warned.
Silver nanoparticles, according to some investigations, have the ability to transfer cell membranes and penetrate into the infectious agent to alter its action.
Due to its size, it is difficult to keep the particles stable, so its composition is based on five percent of metal and 95 percent of a stabilizer, so the Bogdanchikova equipment uses polyvinylpirrolidone, a water soluble polymer, which allows it toThe particles remain separated from each other.
To elaborate the product, the silver is obtained from the Russian-Veta-Vita Research and Production Center, particle developer.
Since 2015, the UNAM has an agreement with the Polytechnic University of Tomsk, in Siberia, Russia, with which they have developed studies in Nanomaterials and made 30 articles.
In the country, scientists from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) and the Nanosciences and Nanotechnology Center (CNYN) of the UNAM created in 2011 Bionag, a company dedicated to marketing the results of research in NanoparticLuas de Plata.
Since that date they have developed three products for the treatment of animals, one for plants, and one for humans, and for those who are interested in obtaining more information can do it through the email Martha.alvarado@bionag.com.
According to official figures, diabetes is the second cause of death in Mexico, and causes the death of about 800 thousand people a year.
According to the most recent edition of the Standardized Procedures Manual for Epidemiological Surveillance of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, of the Ministry of Health, the diabetic foot is one of the main causes of hospitalization and seven out of 10 cases end in amputation.
