Good news for type 2 diabetes patients. Although many believed that there was no cure for this disease, new studies have revealed that following a very low -calorie nutritional plan can reverse it, or at least, reduce the risk of serious complicationsassociated with this evil, such as loss of vision, heart attacks and heart attacks.
The study, conducted by scientists from the University of Newcastle, in England, intended to know the effects of a liquid diet in the form of a carbohydrate, for eight weeks. To do this, he recruited 30 people who had lived with type 2 diabetes for 23 years. At the end of the nutritional plan, half of the people under that diet had a remission of the disease that lasted at least six months.
According to Roy Taylor, professor at the University of Newcastle, in England, and author of the study, the results "are a radical change in our understanding about type 2 diabetes."
Currently, the reason why the diet managed to reverse type 2 diabetes in these people is unknown.Taylor suggests that the explanation may be related to how the body accumulates fat. When the liver must process a lot of fat, insulin secretion is inhibited and diabetes can be caused. On the other hand, if a very low calorie diet is followed, the liver uses the excesses of fat and activates insulin in the pancreas.
Although the research suggests a potential cure, and some think that diet could be considered as a treatment, it is still very early to conclude whether the effect of this is permanent and if it is able to treat the average diabetes patient. Therefore, the ideal is for people to maintain their commitment to have adequate weight and continue with healthy eating habits. The study was published in the Magazine Diabetes Care.
