The Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Patricia Hernández, today held an encounter with the president of the Association for Diabetes de Tenerife, Julián Antonio González, who is also a member of the Federation of Diabetes Associations of the Canary Islands.
During the meeting, the need to work together in the prevention of this disease was addressed, which has a high incidence in the Canary Islands, exceeding the national average in 0.7 percentage points.
The key to the educational factor was also treated as a prevention tool against high obesity rates, which in many cases lead to diabetes.In this regard, the group representative explained that obesity is one of the main causes of diabetes appearance and is considered that about 80% of the new cases in people predisposed to have diabetes, may be triggered by obesity.
Likewise, the president of the Association requested the implementation of a comprehensive plan against diabetes in the Canary Islands that addresses this disease as a whole and proposes solutions.In this regard, the vice president showed her interest in studying and assessing this plan with the Ministry of Health.
Finally, the president explained the operation of the association and raised the need to increase economic resources to ensure the continuity of the same.
