The findings of an investigation suggest that the addition of probiotics to the Dash diet could be used in the future to help protect against diabetes.

The consumption of probiotics can have surprising effects on blood sugar levels, according to a new Canadian research communicated at the Holadoctor.com site.

The study included people who followed the Dash diet (which is recommended to control high blood pressure) and also consumed probiotics, which are considered "good" bacteria. All of them had a decrease in several measures of blood sugar levels for a period of three months, according to the results.

People with consistently high blood sugar levels may or may not be diagnosed with diabetes.A diagnosis can depend on the results of several tests.

Although more research is needed, the findings suggest that the addition of probiotics to the Dash diet could be used in the future to help protect against diabetes, said Arjun Pandey, a researcher at the Cambridge Cardiac Care Center in Ontario and author of the study, presented by theNovember 13 at the annual meeting of the scientific sessions of the American Heart Association, in New Orleans, USA.

The main sources of probiotics are fermented milk, such as yogurt or kefir, and products such as soy yogurt and tofu, but can also be found in cheese.
