We have read that many have doubts about the adequate insulin injection technique, this is an issue that we attend with relative frequency but from which useful updates and advice for those who live with diabetes always arise.
Prior review of the injection zone according to the recommendations
- Sites should be reviewed and palpated by the individual before injection.
- Avoid using the site if it shows signs of lipohipertrophy, inflammation, edema or infection until the problem has been solved.
- Injections should be applied in an neat place and with clean hands.
- The site should be washed with soap and water when it is not clean.
- The disinfection of the injection site is generally required;However, wipes with alcohol can be used before injection in the hospital or at home.
- Make sure the insulin injection site is clean.

Tips for making a less painful injection:
• Keep the medication injectable in use at room temperature.
• Use shorter and thinner needles.
• Use a new needle in each application.
• Insert the needle with a soft and fast movement through the skin.
• Inject slowly and make sure the piston (in the case of syringe) or the button
(In the case of the pen) has been fully pressed.
• Avoid massaging the area after injection.
• If the patient uses alcohol wipes, injecting when alcohol has dried
completely.
